CptCurl "This rifle clearly had very subdued colors from the beginning."
DarylS "...subdued elegance of older rifles and shotguns."
You say "subdued colors," while I say "washed out, faded," colors over time, in this case, over past 132 years, from natural exposure to the environment. The bold bright colors you are referring to, seen often on recently case colored actions, fades over time from exposure to environment, and especially from rubbing (including rubbing with bare hands), from sunshine, and any of a number of other variable factors, including but not limited to air pollution! I have seen this sort of fading, washing out, from minimum to maximum, and everywhere in between. Such washing out, too, can be created to some degree, in the process of case coloring, by using specific techniques.

Jack,

I will be anxious to see detailed photos of your rifle after the application of new colors. When do you expect to have this done? I think members will be interested if you accompany the photos with a detailed write-up of your means and methods.

Wow Curl, that's one really sweet little rifle.
You stole it!
I'm envious. Get cracking on the handloading project. I want to see how it shoots.

Cheers

I graciously have been advised that the original John Rigby & Co. ledger reveals:

Quote:

#15093 is a .360. Sold to Count Goborowski, April 26, 1880. 7 lbs 9 0z.

Wonder who was this Count Goborowski? Could he have been the father of the race car driver, Louis Zborowski? That's what comes up in a Google search: Lewis Zborowski

I just added several photos to the original post. So now the thread opens with some glamour shots (taken just minutes ago) before the "guts" photos.

Really nice rifle, Roscoe. You have some amazing guns in your collection! I might try to shoot my .360 Alex Henry this spring, I need to do a chamber cast to see what length case the rifle takes. Please let us know what loads you are using. I very seldom shoot my rifles, but would like to try the .360 because of the set triggers.
