Nosler Custom Ammo--264 Win Mag---280 Ackley...
      #218203 - 20/10/12 03:34 AM

While I reload for 95% of my guns ..after what I have read recently, curiosityandtime got me to buy a couple boxes of Nosler custom ammo to see how it shoots.. I have now tried itin .280 Ackleyand in .264 Win Mag...have to sayin the case of the 280 Ackley--shooting around 1/2 " groups out of a Lex Webernick custom rifleand very accurate out to 400 yards..have a Zeiss 4.5-14 Rapid Z on it....shot the 264 Win Mag this morning out of a standard factory Remington stainless --all factory with a Swarovski 3-10 scope..shooting 130 gr Nosler Accubonds..have to say, I was impressed--again shooting 3/4" with ease--with good groups holding all the way out to 400 yards as well...Nosler lists them at 3100fps with this load... While I still plan to continue to reload for most..have to admit their product seems to be a good one..IMHO.. its not cheap..but not to many good thingsinlife ever are.. Ripp

Yes the ammo would have to be very well made to keep up to their advertised claims otherwise the consumer would be right at them.

I-too handload all my ammo, however I had an opportunity to recently try some Federal 115gr. (cannelured) Nosler Partition .25/06 factory ammo from my Savage Axis stainless. Like most of my handloads tested so far, they also printed right around 5/8" (1/2" to 3/4").

I did not chronograph them, but the poi is identical to the same bullet weight handload using WW780 & Partitions in top-end loads listed at almost 3,100fps. I did not shoot them at longer ranges, other than bouncing a few shots off the small 3" X 5" plates hanging at 224 yards. Considering the same poi as my 115gr. Partition handloads, I now have sufficient ammo for the winter season.

Daryl why so specific a distance as 224 yards

"hanging at 224 yards"

Dead-on at the 200 meter range, the high dirt berm is 224yards, while the steel plates hang at 220yards, 2 yards behind the 200 meter target stand.

From my 100meter bench, looking cross range to the 200meter range, the plates are 224yards as measured by my range finder. When I'm alone at the range, mid week, there is no problem firing cross-range onto the 200 meter butts - perfectly safe.

The enhanced performance ammunition from Hornady shoots very well too. 3200 fps ( often a bit more)with a 130 grain bullet out of a .270 Winchester. I can barely beat that with a .270 WSM handload. No, you cannot use in a semi-automatic, but it works in all other action types.

Now that bullet technology has come this far, it is only a matter of time before powder technology takes a big leap forward. We are still using WW2 powder technology for our reloads today. I foresee the day when a 180 out if a 30-06 will easily exceed 3000 fps. This might even occur in a .308 Winchester.

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for that info Ripp!

I recently got in a Kimber 84L Montana in .280AI for a customer, and he is having all sorts of trouble locating new unprimed cases for it!
I forwarded this onto him as a possible option, just to get him Up and Running!!!

Doh!

If chambered correctly, and no reason it wouldn't be, he should be able to fire factory .280's - instantly and properly formed brass. That is the normal way most people form their brass for simple ACK-IMP factory rounds.

Poke out the old primers, then he's got the unprimed brass he needs. Even better since they now fit his chamber.

Since I don't like having the normal factory ammo headspace of "up to .007" slop", which is the max. allowable, along with the stretch at the web that occurs with 'short' headspaced rounds, I'd rather make my own brass from '06 brass (or necked straight .270's) and position the shoulder perfectly before it's even fired the first time.

The 2-die set of .280 IMP dies are all that's needed for necking to hold a .284" bullet. Merely neck them until they chamber a crush fit. Once fired, they will perfectly fit the chamber and not stretch for many reloads due to not stretching at the web on that important 'first' firing, that and the well shaped ctg case, of course - stops or slows stretching.

You cannot simply neck up .270's or .25/06's as the shoulder is in the wrong location for a .280 - quite excessive headspace would be the result. .25's and .270s' can be necked up straight or to .35 or .375 (either are fine), then necked down to fit the chamber using your FL die. A pistol expander die can be used as-is or altered, for necking up ctgs. prior to loading for fireforming.

G'Day Fella's,

Ripp, This same customer/Mate (Toofa) also has a Montana in 7-08 and .223, and they both shoot nice small round groups!
I still haven't had a chance to fire a shot thru my new Montana .25-06, to many other projects & work on at present!
Rest assured, I'll post some info here, of how both of these rifles shoot!

Daryl, Thank you for that info but I think Toofa wants cases with the .280AI head stamp on them.
By the way, these Nosler .280AI cases, seem to be bordering on "Unobtanium" in the US, let alone Down Under, hence my thoughts of him using loaded ammo!!!

Doh!

Daryl..

YOU are a wealth of knowledge...thanks for the info above..

Just an FYI..

I converted my Rifles Inc lightweight from a 280 Rem to a Ackley two years ago..and bought nosler ammo at the time as I was in a time crunch...they shoot very wellas I noted in another post...but since then have been able to accumulate 200 rounds of new nosler brass while at a Cabela's in Billings..

thanks

Interesting, I wasn't aware anyone was making .280 Ack/IMP brass. It is a super round, comparing well using today's powders and a 25" to 26" tube, to the 7mm mags with normal, older powders, of course. There are no flies on that ctg.

ya--I plan to reload with some 120 or 130 Barnes Triple x's --the factory Nosler loads are claiming around 3150 i think for the 140 Accubonds..you are correct that is right in line with factory 7mm rem mag factory loads...

Agree--the ackley is an amazing round..and can be used in a standard length action..less powder..recoil and weight to lug up and down the mtns...however the Webernick model I have weighs in around 6lbs with a Zeiss Rapid Z-800...so its really nice for mtn hunting...albeit a bit squirmish ..

I have had some of the Nosler 280AI brass on back order with Midway since April, last I looked projected delivery was January, the date just keeps moving out. My rifle is finally done and I'm forming brass form Remington 280. One thing to watch for is there are two different 280AI chambers, the traditional old one and the new Nosler version. Here is a link to a discussion on it:

The .280 Ackley resurgence has puzzled me. The 7 mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum will do at least what the older round will do, but in a true short action. Lightweight, with a stiffer action, I have been amazed that it was not better received amongst the mountain men who tote these rifles up and down the most difficult terrain in hunting.

that was discussed as well when I had mine rechambered from Rem to Ackley..as to which chambering to go with..fortunatly I had some Nosler brass so I had the gunsmith use them as a reference ..

Like you, I also had a difficult time finding brass at first--then one day in Cabelas there they were ..so I took them all except one box..figured someone else was probably looking as well..

Think there a several reasons for this..one, the ackley is becoming more and more available, caught on I guess, so more manufacturers are offering the Ackley in lightweight rifles...

And using your comments, that the 7mm Rem SAUM offers at least what the ackley does...well if its really close there is no reason really to change...and some people,, myself included have never been fans of the fatty cases..I realize in theory they are suppose to offer certain advantages but for myself I have never warmed up to them..If I was to get one it would probably be in the 270 WSM..thing that particular one offers the most advantages over the standard 270 Winchester..

Then there is the "cool" factor...its a caliber that, when in most hunting camps, your likely the only one with it..its unique and interesting...

I have 4 lightweight rifles for anything from coyotes to Elk/moose/bear guns..all shoot very very well and a joy to carry, but none are in the short mag calibers...

All of this might be totally inaccurate, but are some of my personal reasons..

For me, choosing between the 7mm short mags. or a .280 IMP would boil down to brass availability. There is a ton of '06 brass and '06 based brass out there that is all useable - all the way up to .35 Whelen brass. For me, brass availability makes it a "no question" as to why would I choose the .280IMP.

As far as head stamps, I've necked down and rim trimmed brass marked .45/70 for a 2" .375 calibre Mauser barrel and the same rifle uses brass that has a .350 Rem Mag. stamp on it. Also, in my stuff are boxes of ammo with IVI69, LC73, .308, 7mm/08, .260 Rem. and .243 stamped brass that is necked to .260 or .358 in loaded and 'empty' brass cans for a .260 or .356 Winchester. With them, there no problem seeing what's what. Even the 9.3x57, .9.3x62 & .375'06/IMP is easily separated - ctg. length, bullets loaded and shoulder shape easily distinguish them. These are only a couple examples - head stamps are not important to me. Merely looking at the case or loaded round imakes it easy to identify it & thus the rifle it fits.
With a 9.3x57IMP and a 9.5x57IMP, or a 9x57 and 9.3x57, one might want some other method than visual for distinguishing them, like a proper headstamp - or a confined bullet choice would work.
Now, if the calibres were closer together, with identical shoulders, the proper headstamp might be important.
