My 1938 Husqvarna 146 in 9,3x57.
Not sure what wood was used for this stock, any ideas?

In my eye it looks like light coloured european walnut. Husqvarna stocks used be were it or beech.

This rifle was used in Sweden till fairly recently. Looking at comments from Swedish members on various forums seem to indicate that most (if not all) rifles produced for local Swedish market have stocks of local wood like beech/birch rather than walnut. As the wood is light and rifle was for Swedish domestic market I was not sure if it was walnut hence the question.

Here in Finland birch has quite often used for gunstocks. I have seen some old Husqvarna stocks but none of them has been made of birch. Light colouded walnut is quite normal. And I have to say that most of the ordinary riflemen in scandinavia do not know different woods well enough.
If you NZHunter could send here some bigger fotos I could without doubt say if this stock is birch or not.

Most if not all 46 and 146 rifles beech and birch? No.
Many are walnut as this one appears to be.
I have seen hundreds of these rifles as imported by SARCO and many had walnut stocks as does my 46 and also my 146.
The beech factory commercial stocks are commonly stained a dark almost blackish hue which may be a special concoction to get the wood to take the stain. Both beech and birch are difficult woods to stain. Many beech stocks also feel somewhat "rough" to the touch and I surmise this also may be a production feature to get the wood to take stain.
Whereas many military 96's and 38's have quite light-colored beech stocks, I do not recall ever seeing and unmolested factory HVA 640 series rifle with a light blond stock. Maybe Ken from Kebco can comment as I have a great memory, it's just so short...

lancaster, the "blond" I'm referring to is VERY light, lighter than that, in fact, more like the unfinished stock blank in your picture, of which some 96 military rifles I've seen approach.

Mine's darker - but obviously European Walnut. I've not heard of any of the 9.3x57s being anything but walnut.
I think perhaps later Husky's might have had birch - but not the 1950 and earlier 9.3's - just a guess.

Correct I think.
The 640 series for sure was made in beech, and birch I think, but all the 46 and 146's I've seen were walnut.

Somewhere on the swede forum I seem to remember reference to the source for 46 and 146 walnut stocks being France. Maybe somebody who is a wood expert can verify that by sight, not sure.

According to the book "Husqvarna Rifles 1870-1970", are model 46 walnut stocks, model 146 walnut stocks and model 640 could be both walnut and red beech stocks. It says nothing about birch. // Staffan
