358 Winchester and the lone wolf.
      #171396 - 13/11/10 06:50 AM

I was out in a ground blind in a local deer hunting area when a wolf walked into the line of sight. He stopped and looked directly at me at about 60 yards, I put the cross hairs right between his front legs just below his chin. I put a 225 grain Sierra BT completely through him, the bullet went out the left back leg ham. The entrance was the size of a silver dollar, the exit was baseball size.
This is the first to fall to my new 358, I was amazed and impressed at the same time.

Ah, the first to fall to the Great .358 is a Big Ole Hunk of Woods Trash, a Bush Gang Banger...BRAVO!!

you are the Doctor, and that thing was the disease.

And the .358 supplied the pill!

You just put 20 deer into the bank for next year, nice job .458shooter!

Kill them all.

After the regular hunting season is over, I trek the backwoods in search of wolves.

So, are wolves something you can hunt all year?

Way to go .458.

I spent 2 days searching around in my old deer hunting area and came up with 2 deer tracks. Now, whether it's because of the fires slightly to the West of that area last summer, or due to the wolves, I don't know - there are virtually no deer left in that area now.

The government has closed the 'whelping' season here, but that really doesn't mean a great deal to some people.

I tested some 225 grain Barnes X bullets out of the 358 Hawkeye, without getting pressure signs I got just over 2500 fps out of the 22 inch barrel.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how it does on a big moose from northern British Columbia, I suspect it will have the same effect as a 220 grainer out of an 06.
Bang, stagger, flop, sizzle......

i think yo'll be pleased with the .358. My bro has now shot a few 'wounded' moose with his .356 lever gun and 250gr. RN Hornady's. He is delighted with their performance at 2,156fps mv.

The .358 will do a bit better than that due to the bolt action and 2" longer barrel. He is using 46.0gr. H335, the same load is listed as max in Lee's book in the .358 Winchester at 2,299fps - no bl. length given.

Another 100fps comes from AA2520, BLC2 and AA2460 powders, which show well over 2,300fps in Lee's book.

We were told that the .356 used heavier 'headed' brass than the .358 and that .358 loads could not be used in the .356 - however much data (Speer, Hodgdon, & etc) for the .356 lever gun matches or exceeds the .358 - go figure.

2,500fps with a 225gr. bullet is pretty good stuff - I'd stay with it, if accurate. I suspect you'll prefer that load to anything the '06 can put out.

The .30/06 would be the equivalent to the .358 Winchester load, if the '06 could shoot a 225gr. .358" bullet at 2,500fps. It can't, so it isn't.

The 225 grain load was right from Barnes, I emailed them and they sent me the data.

Gentlemen,

I have been off this site for a year or so, but mere mention of my beloved .358 has gotten my immediate attention. After acquiring my BLR, my mission was to develop loads capable of 250 to 300 yard capability. Bullet expansion at long ranges (I am a hunter, not a shooter, 300 yards is a long way for me) was a problem. Then John Barsness published his article in Handloader, & all was well.

For me, the answer was Tac Powder & magnum primers with 225 & 250 grain bullets. No more compressed loads, & excellent accuracy. I use a 150 yard sightin, & both the 225 Sie & the 250 Sp GS are on hair easily at 300 yards.

Jim
