Rifle Noises
      #16826 - 17/07/04 07:16 AM

While at the rifle range I noticed (even with hearing protection) the rifle noises vary considerably. The 30-06 has more of a boom, while the other 300 Magnums have a higher pitched "Whang". The "Whang" seems to increase in pitch and lodness with the higher velocity magnums. Since I have never shot/used anything 375 or larger, , can anyone describe their shooting noises?

Life is a little like sailing. You can't always follow your charted course, and you your destination may be different from what you had wanted.

My hearing isn't good enough to tell any difference, thats goes with the territory for hunting and shooting for 60 years...Even though I used ear plugs except when hunting..but I have hunted way more than most so I probably have suffered more damage than the average sportsman I suspect?????????/

The subtle qualities of the boom must depend a lot on barrel length, but like most older hunters I can't distinguish anything anymore beyond "loud", "louder", and "way too loud".

haha, my hearing is still ok, not great due to me not always using hearing protection when i should, but ok. I find that shorter barrels and largers cals get more of a *BOOM* whereas longer barrels or smaller cals get more of the *thwang* you described. Hope this helps,

Well too loud is only one rifle in our house: A Blaser R93 Safari 375H&H with Magnaport. It is simply horrible. Even my .460 Weath. MAg (Heym Express) is not as ugly as this gun that pains your ears too much.
