Pato,

I can't help you with a manufacture date. But, I wanted to say well done on this rifle! She's a looker. I especially love the engraving on the rib and rear sights. Stunning gun!

From a list in the Dixie Gun Works catalog:
Last gun made in 1930: 18040
in 1939: 18250
This gives an idea, if the list is correct and if Rigby did not use several serial number ranges.

Pato-

That serial number directory can be misleading.
Crate the rifle and send it to me here in Nevada where I can carbon-date it for you.

The process can take a fair bit of time, but the results are (for me) very satisfying!!!

I need to knock a bank-truck over and take a NT "shopping holiday"

Cheers

Very nice rifle! Looking at "British Gunmakers, Volume One - London" by Nigel Brown I found the following:

1940: SN 18,227
1947: SN 18,262

So, based on this it looks like your rifle was built between 1940 and 1947 but probably closer to 1940. The book says that enquiries about the records can be made through J Roberts & Son, 22 Wyvil Road, London, SW8 2TG. Tel: 020 7622 1131, Fax: 020 7627 4442. Then it goes on to say that the records are now held by John Rigby & Co. (Gunmakers) Inc., at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446 and that the records are now held there. Tel: 805-227-4706. If the records are now held in California, I am not sure why the author left the old information there. Maybe there are records in both locations? I doubt it though.

Regards,

Jim

I dont believe those numbers are correct, I think he is referring to shotguns only in Brown's book. I have a rising bite double rifle built in 1911 and its 176xx, we know they built about 50 DR's a year in those days so that would put Plato's gun around 1922. George Caswell has a many notes on serials and dates of production for this maker that is very accurate. Give him a yell when you can I assume he will give you the same answer as I did. www.champlinarms.com

Dear Sir

If you follow the link I posted above you will see the disposition of the records and the current work on placing the archives into an assessable format..

In short they were sold to and are currently owned by Mr Neil Gibson, the rights to their use resides with Mr Gibson and with his permission our company.
Whilst there may be fragmentary copied information held in various places, the only authorised access to Rigby Records is via our company. In some cases, disclosure of such copied information to third parties may breach contractual obligations and be of doubtful legality.

George Caswell's records are not subject to my comments above as they are his personal collection gleaned from his years in the trade.

Respectfully.

John Rigby&Co.(Gunmakers)Ltd.

As you can see here, such a tangled web to unravel.
Simply crate the rifle and send it to me here in Nevada where I will "carbon-date" the rifle for you...

Cheers
