Cogswell & Harrison 375 H&H
      #158020 - 01/04/10 09:07 PM

Hello all,

I've tried the search function to look for this but to no avail.

Seen a rifle up for sale, on usedguns.com.au

375 H&H, M98 action, make Cogswell & Harrison.
Any info on the maker? Would it be worth while getting this?
Cost of the rifle is $4500 AUS.

Regards, Albert.

Is that about £1500 ? If so with Cogswell name on it and assuming good nick doesn't sound bad to me but I know little about bolts, best, Mike

The earlier guns were supposedly valued much higher than the later ones. I don't know what the dates of that are. I sold one from a shop back in 75 that was perhaps made in the 50's or 60's - we valued them no higher than a M70 or 700. Think we got $250.00 cdn for it. We didn't think it was anything special - nice old Mauser .375 is all, and did not strike the 'gotta have' button in me.
I see that price as being WAYY out of line, but, what do I now? Maybe they had gold filled magazines?

There are a lot of variables to consider when buying a Mauser based sporter.
The gun's vintage has much to do with it, as well as the type of action (military or commercial, std or magnum) and the level of extra finish work such as engraving. Special options such as trap grip cap, sight types etc. can increase the overall appeal of a particular rifle too.
Then, you cannot overlook bore condition, wood condition, level of original finish, drilled holes, later add ons and things like that.
It is true that the later C&H rifles don't command the prices the older ones do.

Forgot to mention, C&H is a highly regarded English "maker". Maybe not in the league of H&H, Purdey, Rigby or Jeffery, (in notariety anyway) but they did put out quality.
I think they were pretty much retailers. In other words, they put their name on "trade" guns and then sold them.
I have a C&H 10.75X68 which I thought was quite special. That is before I learned that it was a typical typeA Mauser (which ARE special in and of themselves).

Post pictures and particulars if you can.

Thank you all for the replies.

Huvius,
I don't know how to post pics, sorry. The particulars on the rifle i've got no idea of who had it or where it's been, sorry i'm not much help.
You did bring up a number of good points in regards to (variables to consider)which i never even thought of.

I think I will keep looking around.

Again thanks everyone.

Regards, Albert.

In your eyes maybe, but most people I know who like English guns would hardly even look at a Cogswell.

I don't think they are anywhere near the other names you mentioned, including Jeffrey even though he didn't make much / anything himself.

Sorry, just my HO.

FYI, $4500 for a C&G 375, subject to year made, model, finish etc, overpriced IMHO.

I think that would be to their own detriment.
There are C&H guns which easily fit into the "best English" category. Just depends on the particular gun. True, they did concentrate on the standard type guns primarily, but not exclusively.

Cogswell and Harrison made both plain, low priced guns and some fantastic high grade stuff. I agree with Huvius - some of their high grade guns are very nice. Coggies did find places in some of the best armories in India during the Raj era. It wuld depend on the particular gun and the particular buyer, I guess.

Good hunting, everyone!

I know this rifle and if it where say 404 then I would have bought it. Seems nice anyway. I spoke to a great Zim Professional hunter the other day who uses his grand fathers CH 375 to this day.
