Mod. 1917
      #157045 - 21/03/10 01:11 PM

Just picked up a Mod.1917 in 3006 Its Rem. made so has the flat bottom metal. I doin't really know what to do with it. I though at one time of doing a 404 but would take a lot of money. So I might just leve it a 3006 and shoot it as is. It has had the ears removed and has been polished. How big is this action really I have heard that you can put some pretty large rounds in it with out a lot of work. thanks TomN

If your M1917 Enfield has flat bottom metal, it's been altered. Remington Enfields had six round magazines just like all the rest.

A Remington Enfield can be made into any .30-'06 length caliber or any short magnum. If you want a little more oompf from your rifle, you might consider rechambering to the .300 Winchester Magnum or the .308 Norma Magnum. The latter would give you more room in the magazine to seat the bullet out, increasing the case capacity.

If you could locate a P-14 bolt, you could avoid having to alter the original .30-'06 bolt face. You also might want to add a Dayton Traister cock on opening conversion.

Yes - cock on opening - so, Model 30 Remington, A. Yes- bottom metal has been flattened - they are all kinked originally.
You can make just about any ctg. in it, including a .375H&H.

I had one that was 150fps slow at max pressure as an '06. Since it had a new-ish barrel, I re-chambered it to .300 Win Mag. thinking I might get H&H ballistics, but as a .300 Win mag, it was 200fps faster than any book at max pressure. Nice to get 3,300fps with 165gr. Noslers.
Funny, as an '06, it was most accurte with 180's and 220's, but as a .300 Mag that barrel loved 165's, didn't like 180's and hated 220's.
With 165's, it would hold just under an inch most of the time for 5 shots, with the odd 5 shot group hitting 5/8". Wonderful goat and sheep rifle for stretched ranges.

I have one in 450 Ackley Magnum and I am building a 416 Rigby on another. I also have an original Mod 30 Remington in 30-06.
