Boddington calls it 'one of the world's most versatile big game hunting cartridges' and says 'you can't go wrong with it in unfamiliar country'.
Anyone agree/disagree? Do you shoot one? What are the pros and cons? Is there a better alternative?
I have never used one, though I have used an 8x68S, so interested in any thoughts, observations, comments, criticisms, etc.

Versatile - yes, I have owned & shot one for over 30? years. My first was a custom on a Husky action, light in wght. and it would beat on me fairly hard. The one I own now is a Ruger #1 and I can handle the recoil well, I have .375 H&H also in a #1 that is less punishing as the jolt is less sharp. Ammo is pricey IMHO, but one can always reload. Alternatives, of course there are, question is do you want to shoot a Weatherby cal. By the way what are considering for a rifle? FWIW --- John303.

Personally, I love the .300 Weatherby. The only other Weatherby I like as much or more is the .340. The .300 Wby is certainly a go anywhere, do anything cartridge for non-dangerous game anywhere. I have several boxes of 180 grain Barnes-X bullets that I'm keeping for a special hunt, but have since switched to the 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. Both are extrememely accurate out of my rifles. At a MV of 3,250 fps, sighted in for 3" high at 100 yards yards will give you a 300 yard zero and 8" of drop at 400 yards. I understand Boddington's position on not going wrong with it in your hands in unfamiliar country. Of course, a laser rangefinder also helps. For those who've learned the cartridge and can master it, it truly is impressive. The handloaded .300 RUM will be in the same league.

i used it on grizzly why do people not consider the brown bear and the grizzly not dangerous game i have taken half of the game in north america all with a german 300 wby,i prefer it better with its 1:12 twist.i have taken game to 800 yards combined with a barnes bullet it will stop what ever you are shooting at i think its the greatest 300 i have not had the chance to compare it to the 300 ultra mag but soon will

You are exactly right regarding your comment about dangerous game. I was speaking in context of legally approved calibers for African dangerous game. My comment was too narrow minded. Many, many, Brown, Grizzly, and Polar bears have fallen to that caliber, as have other dangerous game.

north american dangerous game to me are grizzlies, brownies, and big alligators, polar bears also.and any arctic hunting where one goof up could end it for you.but the weatherby will handle all those creatures if the shooter does its job.i really believe it would be good on lion and leopard and buffalo with solids but it lackd diameter and legal requirements.

Agree with most of what you stated--think if you handload especially, it is a slightly better cartridge than the Win mag--however the Win is a pretty good round in its own as well..used one only for about 15 years on everthing from pronghorn to elk and everything in between..

As to the RUM--I have loaded 180 A-Frames with very good results at 3410 fps--and 200's at 3175 fps... it truly is my favorite 30 cal. cartridge..incredibly accurate..with all I shoot through it..

I've hunted with the .300 Weatherby and the .300 Win Mag quite a bit. The .300 Weatherby is an outstanding cartridge and over the years I had better luck with it than the Win Mag. But I don't reload and the .300 Weatherby is expensive to shoot. When I bought my .375 Ruger I got rid of both the .300 mags and make the jump from .30-06 for most big game to .375 Ruger for bigger game. Since I seldom take a big game shot beyond 200 yards I'm perfectly satisfied with the 06/.375 combination. Really don't need anything else.

Do the Accubonds hold well up at those velocities? No core separation from the jacket?

I've had very good results with the Accubonds in .257, .270, and .300 Weatherby calibers. The penetration was deep, but the bullet will shed it's forward portion. Weight retention has consistently been between 55-60% of original weight. This was true using a 110 grain Accubond at 300 yards, a 140 grain Accubond at 85 yards, and a 180 grain Accubond to 180 yards.

Over the years I have hunted with 257wby, 7mmwby, 300wby and 270wby. 257 and 300wby I got no interest to have again.
Personally, I don't see the need of a 300wby, 7mm wby hauls a 175 grain bullet at 3000fps, 270wby shoots a 150 grain bullet at 3200 fps, outstanding trajectory with less recoil and can be had in a lighter rifle. I like to get closer and 300 meters is my field limit.

For a fast 30 I would look at 308 Norma mag or 300 Win. 3006 loaded hot is not bad either. Goal is a bullet with good bc launched at 2900 - 3050 fps.

Johan,

You know, I am ALMOST of the same opinion as you regarding the .300. I too own a .257, .270, .300, and .340 Weatherby. I find myself thinking more often these days that the .300 is afflicted with the stigma of the all-around caliber. I find myself reaching for the .257, .270, or .340 in most cases instead of the .300.

This is strictly a matter of perspective based on the rifles an individual owns. I only think this way because I have calibers on either side of the .300. Another man may have the .257 and a .375 H&H, in which case a general purpose .300 Weatherby would fit right in.

which one though the german version has 1:12 twist the others 1:10 the german wont fire a 200 or greater well but thats ok the 180 barnes has dropped moose grizzly and what ever i pull the trigger on i am getting ready to shoot a 257 always wanted one and that 25 is fast.but it boils down to choice all the animals we hunt now have been killed with sharp sticks before we even had rifles so perspctive is the key phrase here.i for one stll like the 300 wby german version

I find myself doing the same thing..I pretty much have one type or rifle or another in calibers from .17 to .470 Nitro..--depends on the game I am going after as to which gun I grab--however if I am going to hunt elk..I still reach for a 30 caliber typically--usually my 300 Ultra--
but, leaving today to hunt some muleys in the rut---grabbed the titanium in .257 Weatherby..can be long shots..with 100 gr barns at 3700 fps--it seems to close the distance rather rapidly..

A close friend has a 24" .300 WTBY Remington that gets 3,230fps with 200gr. Nosler Partitions. It holds them into 3/4" at 9x and uses IMR7828 - straight from Speer's #9 manual. It seems to have a fast barrel, but does it at what measures out to be normal factory load pressure. Due to partial full length sizing, his brass has lasted over 10 firings, annealed once and is still going strong.

I've never personally liked the .300's, but his does the job well on moose, deer and bear - same bullet for all.

There is no denying the fast stepping rounds of the Weatherby's. The favorite in my Weatherby stable is the 7mm Wby in a MKV Custom. It shoots better than I deserve.
In the arena of the 300's though, I am also leaving them at home more and I am on the trail of a good 375. H&H or Ruger is still to be decided. Any thoughts appreciated.

I've used the .300 Weatherby as my go-to hunting rifle for over 25 years. Mine is a Remingon Classic, issued in their annual special calibre sometime back in the mid-seventies, I think.

I was actually going to get a .300 Win or a .338 in a Kleingeunther, but for whatever reason, I took the Classic. With the money I saved, I bought a 2.5x9 Swarovsky scope and a couple of boxes of 220 grain cartridges.

When I went to the range and fired a 5 shot group into one ragged hole, I was hooked. The load I use (and still took my deer with it this year, albeit overkill) is a 200 grain Nosler Partition, behind 83 grains of IMR7828. I get a chronographed 3200+ and a consistent group size of about .75 inches, going as tight as .285 if I'm really on, with this load. Yes, I'm not kidding. This is the single most accurate rifle I've ever owned that wasn't a .222 Reminton. I've killed whacks of deer, moose, and bear, plus other assorted game with this gun, (some with the 180 grain Sierra Gameking, which also shoots very well in this tube) and anything that ever hit the dirt never got up again. Never lost anything, and never pulled the trigger on this gun more than once, but I did have one muley buck that didn't know he was dead go about 200 yards before he piled up, after a clean lung shot. I used the 200 grainer on him - too much bullet and too small an exit hole. I wasn't hunting deer at that time, and he stepped into the open begging to be shot.

If you notice, Daryl S.'s post above is talking about me and my rifle. I think that lets you know what I think of the .300 Weatherby, eh?

And for whatever reason, Daryl shoots all of my guns better than I do. Could it be talent? :-)
