Hello all
Can someone steer me to a website or look in your reference books. I have 2 Winchester Mod 70's I would like to know the lineage of.
Mod 70 Safari Express G344265 chambered in .458 Win Mag 23 inch barrel
Mod 70 Has "Super Grade" on the floor plate G1435925 chambered in .458 Win Mag 21 inch barrel
Thanks

Thanks SharpsNitro
That leads me to ask if a Win Mod 70 is made in 1955, does that automatically make it a pre 64, or are there other criteria. Would the fact that it is a pre 64 add value to the rifle. The rifle I refer to is Mod 70 Safari Express G344265 chambered in .458 Win Mag 23 inch barrel
Thanks

I believe pre 64 Winchesters did not use G in the serial number just numbers so its not a pre64 also "Safari Express" came after "Super Express, I would think you have late model rifles,.........are they CRF?

The Safari Express is CRF with a fixed elector. The Super Grade has a plunger ejector and is push feed. The web site that SharpsNitro directed me to ages the Safari Express at 1955 but it would not let me put the letter prefix in, which makes me think it is may be a later model, that and the fact that the 458 WM wasn't adopted until 1956, I think. More digging required. It dates the Super Grade at 1979 without the letter prefix.
Is there an easy way of identifying a Model 70 that came out of the Winchester custom shop.
Cheers

From memory all Winchester factory info went to the Buffalo Bill Centre , The Safari Express I would think start from the late 1990's The Super Express maybe late 1980',
As for a Winchester custom rifle the rifle would be marked as that i.e "Custom Safari Express" also the Custom shop had their own proof mark different from the standard one's, From the info you have provided they are not custom rifles or Pre64 rifles........

Check the photos for the Safari Express at this link here on NE Forum: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=137363&an=0&page=0#Post137363 If it is the same, which it sounds like, then it was made in the nineties or naughties. Cheers, Chris

G prefix are post-64 as noted above.
Super Grades can be push-feed or CRF.
