Ballistics Hole
      #126740 - 12/02/09 08:30 AM

This is one of those, What Calibre ? questions.

I have a (2nd) FN Mauser '98 action ready for another custom rifle project.
I want to fill the Ballistics hole between .243W and 9.3x62.

I'm thinking 6.5x65, .270, 7x57, 7x64, .30-06..

6.5x68 has been mentioned in another forum.

Use will be small/medium, antelope/deer, plains game.

What are your suggestions and why ?

From the calibers You mentioned I would choose the 7x57 simply because I am a fan of that great old classic. With rather heavy bullets this cartrigde is capable of dispatching most small to medium size game animals without excessive meat damage. It is not a super fast long range cartridge but a true hunter seldom has to take a shot at ranges longer than 200 meters which is no problem for the good old 7x57.

Wicked good hunting !

I'd stay away from a 6.5x68 unless you want to shoot it very little or replace the barrel in 900 to 1,100 rounds. The case capacity is about the same as a .264Win Mag, which makes it slightly hard on barrels, except due to the short neck and sloping shoulder, is a bit harder on throats than the .264 WM.

The 7x47 Mauser from a 24" FN M98 will make 2,960fps with 140gr., 2,800fps with 160's and there is no need for anything heavier - just pick your bullets wisely. As to range, it will handle any game suitable for the bullets chosen, at whatever range you have the capability to accurately make the shot.

I'd go for another 7x57Mauser in a heart beat, given the choices you present.

7x57 then 7x64.

Not on the list would be my favorite; 6.5x55 especially since you are using a 98 action.

7 x 64 just to be different and to reach out with authority, or .318 WR just because I love it.

IMHO the .318WR is starting to close the gap with the 9.3, ballistically.

'to reach out with authority,' I like that.

Yes I know that the .318 is close so it is not really what you want, It is just that we had the two that we have nearly finished at the proof house today and I am in love :-)

IMHO, it would be a toss up between the 7x64 and .30-06. Choose whatever is easier to obtain in your area.

You can never go wrong with the great 7x57. 100 plus years of exceptance and aproval (in the face of numerous other "beter"rounds over the years, many of which are now obselete) by the worlds best hunters says that this cartridge, (even at the soft factory loads and who uses those anyway) is better than most for mice to moose, and a heck of a lot besides. You handle history and walk in big footsteps when you carry a 7x57 afield. As Daryl said the 140gn bullet has plenty of reach and the 160 has authority. There are very good reasons for its continued existence and it will still be with us as long as there are hunters among us.

Mate, the 7x57 would be the ducks nuts. I'll be building one on a ZKK 601 when it turns up, it will partner the ZKK 601 6x43 i've started on. You'll be able to get ammo easily, especially in Africa.
Cheers.

8x57 or 30-06. I have one of each and love both though my vote between the two would be for the German 8mm.

Now that so many people have given you their suggestions you must remember to post pictures of the build process here once you get started.

Good hunting!

7x57 or 7x64 as on the Aus forum.
I would imagine Brambles recoil pad is an original English "Silvers"
Harder than hell but classic. Available in Aus for $110+ post or direct from Kynoch Web Sight.

Thanks for the feedback guys. 408NICKAL is my gunsmith so I was embarrased and surprised to see him on here giving advice ....

7x57 it will be.
FN Mauser 98
1 in 9" twist barrel.
Quarter rib with express sights.
Red recoil pad.

I will try to post the build but it will be a slower process than my 9,3x62.

Got to get to Africa and back in June first.

I would look for a suitable medium sized calibre perhaps better for longer range hunting. Something in .30 calibre or 7mm.

7x57 for light stuff and properly loaded 9.3x62 for everything else - or simply build the 7x57 just because everyone needs a 7x57. The 9.3x62 is the only one needed for Africa. Just practise with it and become one with it.
