Custom Stocker "MM Salem"
      #112655 - 27/08/08 05:06 AM

I have a Browning Medallion (long extractor 7mm Mag)that was evidently a salt one(not uncommon) The owner must have really liked it as he took it to a custom stocker who did a wonderfull job. Fit and finish are very well done the gripcap is case colored and the checkering,especially around the grip, is unusual but perfect.It is marked "MM Salem" inside the stock.Has anyone ever heard of who this could be or have a rifle done by him(her?)
Here are a couple pictures;

Thanks for any info

I have no idea of who this person is but they did a great job on this stock, you are lucky to own it. Thanks for sharing it with us. Bob H.

Monte Mandarino worked in Salem when he apprenticed under John Bivins. I wonder if it's one of his.
I don't know how his guns were signed in those days.

You could send that photo to Mark Silver, a fine gunmaker and friend of Monte's - he has a nice website. He would be able to help you, I expect. Don't know how to get hold of Mandarino himself. But I would bet that is a Mandarino rifle.

John Bivins said once that Monte was the greatest gunmaker of the last 400 years. When you look at his whole output including the breathtaking flintlocks he's made, you start to believe it's true.

I called him, but the number's not working anymore.
Maybe he's moved?

the word from monte is that he looked at this gun a while ago for someone else for the same reason and no he did not build it, a long shot is the custom gun section of gun digest they have usually featured about 15 custom rifles per year there gun looks like it could have been built in the 80s you never know could be a pic....paul

I do have some old gun digests and will look through them,there has to be at least one more gun out there and one day it will turn up.

Hi pjaln,

sorry it took so long to reply.I do know Malcolm I see him at auctions,Amoskoeag,Julia and sometimes the smaller ones I attend. have been kinda good and staying away for the big ones latly thou (stock market is taking my fun money and more !Its like a divorce only worse,you lose half your money and still have your wife )
I will have to ask him next time I see him thou,I never knew he was a stocker I know he has some great guns.

I have never been to Pete Harvey's but he did email Greg Martin for me to let them know we are allowed handguns on our C&R FFL's here (must be a San Fran Kalif thing that they don't).
