Can anyone here post pics of s/steel, walnut stocked rifles. Considering that option as I have the blank and donor action. Would love to see some completed rifles.

Here are some photos of a custom job that Alex is completing for a client on a Ruger no1 action. The client wanted an octagonal barrel and wider forend for the type of shooting that he does.
 
These photos were taken before the final fitting and shaping.

Thanks Laura, thats one nice rifle. Is the grip cap stainless? Nice grain in the buttstock. Excuse my ignorance Laura, but does Alex do the stockwork as well as the metalwork?
Any others out there on bolt actions.

Thanks for the compliment.
Yes, the grip cap is stainless. Alex made it. Yes, Alex does all our stock work. He is a perfectionist.
Here are some photos of Alex's work on a 98 Mauser bolt action with a peep sight that he made as well.

Here are a couple of photos of my only stainless rifle. It is a awitch barrel job and can be a .338 Win Mag, a 7mm Rem Mag or a .257 Weatherby Mag. depending on my needs. The stock blank was sent to the late Mel Smart (now Serengeti Stockworks) in the States for laminating. Made up of 5 laminations with the 2 outside ones being about half an inch thick. You have to look really hard to notice it is laminated.
I like how it turned out.

Barrel switching is via a barrel vice, action wrench and collets made specifically for each barrel. I usually use one barrel for a year or 2 then swap to another calibre for a few seasons etc. It could be done in field by mounting the vice on a towbar or bull bar etc but I don't bother. I do need to re sight scope each time.
I probably have other photos somewhere if you want me to post. Have some of the vice etc.
Ross Waghorn did the stock.

I'm not going down the switch barrel route, I was just curious that's all.
Is that a one pice floorplate, and if so, by who?
What weight would your rifle be with the 338 or 7mm barrel?

8lb 13 oz with .338 bbl. Would weigh similar in any cal as all 3 bbl's are same profile, length and with same furniture.

Thanks mate. I like it too. It's my only stainless rifle - all others are rust blue/walnut. This one I use when I'm not sure what conditions I'll encounter. I had to chuck that ugly, black, cold, souless factory plastic stock away tho and thought the laminated walnut would be a good compromise and it has turned out to be a good decision.

Without a doubt that's the most attractive laminated walnut stock I have ever seen. Wish I could see it in person.
Can you tell us something about the source of your blank and of your stock work. The lines look impeccable.
I would also like details of your method of switching barrels. Is it a "takedown" system or do you have to put the rig in a barrel vise?
BTW, I am a HUGE fan of the .338 Win. Mag. In fact, I have a M70 Classic Super Grade .338 Win. Mag. squirreled away in my safe. Absolutely new in the box, never fired, never scoped, I got it new directly from the distributor just when the discontinuance of the M70 was announced.

Sorry mate - forgot about the trigger guard/floor plate. It is nothing exotic I'm afraid - just a factory one although the mag box has been widened a smidgen to enable 4 down.

Stock was a really nice piece of Cal English which I sent to Mel Smart for laminating. The 2 outside laminations are quite thick, the next 2 slimmer and the middle one only about 5mm thick. I think he turns the inner 2 around so that the grain is layed in opposite directions for strength. He also 90% inletted and shaped it and one of our best stockmakers here in OZ did a bit of reshaping and then finished it. I can post some more photos if you want.
The barrel changing is by way of a vise, action wrench and collets for each barrel. It seems to work well but you wouldn't want to be changing barrels every 5 minutes
