Which twist rate is best in a 35 Whelen?
      #105820 - 22/05/08 07:47 AM

Ok I'm putting the 300 H&H project on the back burner for now. Becoming very interested in a 35 Whelen. To get the most out of this caliber, which twist rate is best? I'm thinking 1-12 from what I've been finding. What about optimum lenght?

I'd agree, accepting 1/14 if that was all I could get in a blank, but no slower.

As for length, my opinion is that it 100% depends on the use of the gun.

For instance, I would jump at an 17 or 18 inch barreled carbine in .35 Whelen for following bear hounds or as a saddle gun, but also could find a lot of practical use for a 24 or even 25 inch barrelled rifle for general deer and elk hunting.

What would it be used most likely for?

You would be amazed at what it takes to stabilize a bullet. A .357 mag snub nose is only a 2" barrel. What's that, about 1/4 of a turn before it exits?

So, I think it really does depend on the barrel length and bullet weight.

PacNor recommends 12" or 14" I'd go with the 12" for a really short barrel.

From my experience with .350RMs with 18" and 20" barrels and a .35W with a 22" barrel and ranging in weight from 6 to 9 pounds field ready, I would go 20" and target 7 pounds field ready. The 18" is too loud, and as much as I hate to admit that a light or medium rifle can be too light the 6# is too light.

Twist rate calculator http://www.uslink.net/~tom1/twistrate.htm
The Hornady 250gr bullet is 1.27" long...So if 250gr is the longest you want to shoot then a 1:16 would be fine...Esp.if you were also going to shoot cast boolits as they like slower twists at higher vel...

Barrel length..That would depend on your use and what you like...

BTW:

My 9.3x57's, no superspeeder to be sure, have 14 and 15 inch twists and stabilize 286 grain bullets just fine, as well as giving really excellent accuracy with the 270-275 grain NEI cast bullet I have used in it.

Bullets of .358 cal in excess of 250 grains aren't very common, and not sure what your desired weights are.
