I doubt that it is original.

But it sure is ugly

The stock looks just like the one on my BRNO 21H in 7X64, except of course for the cheekpiece, which is almost certainly an add on. However, I can understand the reason behind it. The BRNO action requires "high" rings for the scope to clear the bolt handle. Mine is equipped with Warne "high" rings, and even then I was limited in the size of the ocular cell by the height of the butterknife bolt handle.

I had to add a lace on cheek pad from Brownell's to raise the comb to the point that the scope was readily usable.

In the benighted age when these rifles were manufactured, Europeans seemed to take for granted that scopes were auxillary equipment and that instant access to iron sights was an absolute must. Hence, factory mounted scopes came equipped with "see throughs", which allowed the shooter immediate use of the iron sights without removing the scope. This naturally put the scope much too high for instant target acquisition and snap shooting.

Rather than alter the metal work by lowering the scope clearance of the bolt handle, the owner of this rifle chose to accomodate the wood to its idiosyncracies, hence the atrocious stock.

xausa about your words "add on" it looks to me as if it is part of the actual stock shaping...how ever as i said its from Mars and ugly as! There is a price of $750 on it in the ad and i look at that as "oh yeah, another $500 for a synthetic stock to go on it too".

Not original stock for sure, I have a 1954 Brno in 7x57, double set triggers, butter knife handle with an original factory scope. The scope does not have see through mounts and the mounts are integral to the scope. One can remove the scope very quickly by loosening the mount screws and pulling the scope back off the dove-tails, there is a pin on the mount to keep going to far forward in re-mounting the scope. The scope is mounted very low and comes up perfectly. I have not seen another so I would guess that the scopes matched to these rifles are rather scarce. I looks in this case one problem created another - too high mounts and so on. FYI--- You can see an "original" Brno sans scope by going to Tradeex Canada. --- John 303.

Gryphon, if you want to buy the gun use the stock to its full advantage. Honest, I like the barreled action.

Let us know how the deal works out. Get a piece of wood for that barreled action and you'll have a really neat gun.

I have seen cheekpieces added to stocks which were practically indistinguishable from the original wood even on close examination. However, I wouldn't be too concerned about the stock at that price. That growth can always be surgically removed with a rasp.

I would be a little more concerned about the caliber, since the 7mm Remington Magnum (I assume that's what's being referred to) didn't appear until 1962, so the rifle may well be a conversion from 7X57 or 7X64 and there may be some feeding issues involved in changing an action meant for either of those rounds to a short magnum cartridge.

Unaltered rifles of that nature go for around $1200 in the States.
