Curl-

That's what I meant to say.
Mortimer, not Manton.

There seems to have been a pair of 12b mantons sold at the june 9 auction for $13kUSD (just checked the holts website)

I wonder what the condition was on that pair.

Really, a cased pair of 12b percussion howdah pistols from a known maker at $13,000 sounds pretty darn good!

They were in OK condition Tinker considering their age but by no means exceptional, the guide price was US$6-8k so they went at the high end price. I know someone in Europe has a MINT unfired cased Holland and Holland Howdah pistol and a deal was discussed eatly last year but fell through. Apparently it is stunning. best, Mike

Mike-

Thanks for the clarification.
The Mortimer set above in this thread is awfully sweet.

I do very much like these old 'backup pistols'
I'm picky though, and my current budget just doesn't support my interest.

Some day, perhaps I'll have the extra scratch to fund something like the Mortimer cased set, or even better yet a cartridge gun set up for sixteen bore roundball!

Tinker,

I would think a set of Mantons would bring more than a set of Mortimers, all else equal. How can this seller think the Scot Mortimer was "one of London's top makers"?

I agree with you that the Mortimers appear to be nice, but my comments are limited to the somewhat erroneous description and the low-grade photos. My inquiry to the seller is yet to be answered.

I would think your estimate of price is over the top, but I confess little knowledge of these things. Now a pair of Jones action breech loaders with rifled barrels would be rippers!

In the end, my comments probably just illustrate my profound ignorance. Opinions from others?

I'll bet a hammerless Howdah would be tough to open once it's fired if it cocks on opening...
That Lang is a neat piece!
It'd be good for feral housecats around my yard...

Curl-

I'm perfectly comfortable with the possibility that my guesstimate could be over the top!

I tend to fancy high grade Scottish equipment over high grade Brit gear though.

MacNaughton-

You make a very good point on short-barreled hammerless doubles!

The only hammerless contraption similar to a howdah that I can think of is the Ithaca auto-burglar. I haven't handled one, but I too wonder how hard it is to cock.

On the other hand, a nice Jones actioned hammer howdah is just the right thing and would be effortless to open. . .
