Merkel 450 #2 ????
      #99926 - 22/03/08 03:30 AM

Saw Merkel 450 #2 double on Guns International and wanted opinions as I have never seen a Merkel in this caliber. Also, what is BLNE? Any opinions appreciated. Thank you in advance,
TexasClay.

It has been discussed at AR already. It appears to be a re-done shotgun.

Never mind, found it. The pictures are too poor to tell much, but that is not a cartridge chambered in the current Merkel line. It looks like a fairly typical Mekerl 140 style boxlock. If so, and if post war, it could either be a custom chambering or a rechamber, although why rechamber for that cartridge is beyond me. I can't find a 450 #2 in any of my pre-war catalogs either. NECG might have more information, but as the pictures seem to show what may be a gun in less than pristine condition, and you can get one in a 470 of 500NE for under 10K, why bother with this one? Thanks on that link. Glad your eyes are better than mine. That simply reinforces the 'why bother' clssification. I'd stay away from that abortion. Dave

T,

It's a re-bore or custom, I have never seen a Merkel, either vintage or new, in 450 #2.

BLNE = Boxlock Non Ejector.

Boys,

It's been done by John Maples and reportedly done WELL.

It's the lowest pressure big bore ever [450 #2] so a

good idea to put onto a shotgun action. I bet it's worth

the money if you're not like me, a man stuck and stuck firm

on U.K. built rifles. The only thing I would waver on is

a 600NE. They are so costly from the U.K. it would require

Devine intervention for one to become a possession of

mine.
