.333 Griffin and Howe Super Mag.
      #98699 - 08/03/08 11:41 AM

I own a Griffin and Howe rifle built on what I believe is a Remington model 30 express action.
It is chambered in .333 Griffin and Howe Super Magnum which I assume is a .350 G&H mag necked down.
The boys at G&H have never heared of this cartridge and at that time of my inqiry and were not rearching gun histories for owners. The G&H number on the gun is 2257.
Any info on this out there?

I received the following information from Cornell Publications recently. I own seveeral G&H's myself, but have not tried this out yet.

Griffin & Howe, the custom gunmaker, was a division of Abercrombie from 1929 until Abercrombie bankrupted in 1976. It is now a private company, but in the vaults are scores of musty old ledgers dating from 1901 for VL&D and from 1929 for A&F, each containing the records of sale for thousands of firearms that passed over the counter at these two venerable firms. Bob Beach, the chief cook and bottle washer in charge of records research with G&H has meticulously overseen the laborious task of transcribing records to digital format that you can search and if you get a match for free or get a certificate for a nominal charge. The records G&H have are from VL&D from 1901 until A&F took them over in 1928 and for A&F from 1929 until 1976. To date he has added over 25,000 guns to the list from 1901 until 1939 with lots more to come- you have to keep going back to the G&H site to see new entries.

Hello, I have over 600 G&H numbers in my database and do not have this caliber listed. As I get some time I'll see if I have any ads for this caliber. They made a few one-off like the .400 G&H magnum made form the 350 G&H. Nice looking rifle, Michael

XAUSA and Michael,
Thanks for the info and the effort.
What of the action? Am I right in thinking it is a Remington Model 30, or is it a modified Enfield?
It does cock on opening, which as I understand it, was a change Remington made in the Enfield design.

The Remington 30 IS a modified Enfield. The bolt handle on your rifle is a G&H modification, as the Model 30 shared the "dog leg" design with the Enfield. The early (1926-1930) Model 30 bolts had an additional gas port drilled just behind the extractor collar. The later (1930-1940) bolts had a Mauser type guide rib riveted to the bolt body and two gas ports behind the extractor collar.

There were also more subtle changes to the cocking cams, allowing for a cock on opening feature for the later Model 30's. However, your rifle appears to have an after market trigger, which probably incorporates the cock on opening feature.

Yours is evidently not the post 1930 Model 30, since that model featured an altered bolt stop, whereas the earlier Model 30 bolt stops were identical with that of the Enfield.

A friend of mine has a 334 OKH Magnum that used the same .333 bullets as my 333OKH. His is based off of the 375H&H case and mine the 30'06 case. Could it be the same.

I have RCBS dies for this gun and by looking at those, the base diameter of the case looks like H&H size. I'm thinking it must be based on the H&H case as is the .350 G&H.
Interesting that all of these "wildcatters" ended up with such similar cartridges.
For instance, your .333OKH must be very similar to a .35 Whelen. Your buddies .334OKH Mag. must be just about identical to my .333G&H.
Seems to me that if you had a battery of rifles in chamberings with a common base shell such as
25-06, 30-06, 35 Whelen. Or .280 Dubiel, .300H&H, .333 or .350G&H, .375H&H and had resizing dies for each, you would be set. At least for North American game. Imagine a takedown rifle with three or four different barrel options. (please, nobody suggest TC Encore, please!!)

Model 30s are neat guns. The last of the line for Remington's upgrades of the umpteen zillion P-17 actions they built at the end of WW I and the most modified and 'usable' of them all. Hard to find in original form as many were turned into custom rifles. And yours is a beauty. Dave
