Did the British use a web and leather sling with the raw hide thongs?
To be used on the 1920s or so guns that have the large eye on the barrel band and butt stock to tie the thong to.

It's a web sling and at the ends is leather sewn to the web and made into a cone then the thong slides
thru the cone to tie to the barrel band eye and the one on the butt of the stock.

Like the one Jeff's Outfitters sells but a web sling instead of leather.

I thought I had seen references to it but can't find any pictures of or information on them any where.

If they did, does anyone have pictures of one or a place to buy them?

Allen

Original slings that I have seen incorporated a snap hook on the leather sling. The snap hook goes through the sling eyes on the barrel and butt of the rifle.

Here's a photo of the original sling and attachment with my Woodward .450/400 3 1/4" double rifle:

There is a very similar arrangement with an Alex. Henry double .577BPE I recently acquired.

I hope this helps with your question.

I have an old Jeffery Bolt with a sling like you describe only the sling is leather not web. I also have a Rigby case that came with a sling like this also. Unfortunately I got the case and all of the tools but no Rigby inside.

Mickey,

Thats a very nice sling. The bigest reason I was thinking of a web with a thong is that the only sling of that type I have found so far is from Jeff's Outfitters and it has a rather large buckle though it is leather covered.

Could you post a pic of your slings buckle? Or a few over all veiws if you didn't mind.

It looks like it has a suade lining tht stops a few inches from the end? How wide is it?

Hopfuly you don't mind all the questions. Thanks.

Allen

It does not have any buckles. It is 2" and it is suede lined so it doesn'tslip on your shirt. The sling ties to eyes front and back and has no metal to bang.

Is it adjustable, or do you use the thongs to change the length?

They are not adjustable except through the strings. Having a buckle to bang against the rifle would defeat the purpose of silence.

I have a couple of the old 2" web slings but they have hooks like Curls. They have a metal buckle for length.

CptCurl,

Do the hooks swivel on the eye of the sling part or are they fixed in position?

Also do the hooks fit somewhat close in the barrel band eye or is there a lot of play.I mean like major floping around.

And one other question, do the hooks have rounded enough edges as to not mar the barrel or stock?
Or is that a concern?

Allen
