.577 light nitro Loads
      #98293 - 04/03/08 10:00 AM

Hi,

I'm looking for 577 light nitro loads that will produce around 5000 foot pounds energy and keep the
pressures low. I would like to stay away from the 750 grain bullets.

Thanks,

You will be looking for around 1665 fps with a 650gr projectile. I have used 95gr Varget, but prefer a slightly faster powder in my shorter barrels. Probably no help to you state-side, but 77gr AR2206 does it for me.

If it's a strong original gun (not a shotgun conversion) then 65gr of H4198 is a recommended starting load by some.

You will need varying amounts of filler or wads with all these loads.

What type of rifle and what is it proofed for? 3" case or 2 3/4" case? 750 or 650 grain bullet?

Hi,

At 1665FPS a 650 grain bullet will produce about 4000FPE. I need 1850FPS for 5000FPE. I was thinking about RL15 and starting at 90 grains and working up. I'm building this on a very stout AYA 10ga box lock action, three bites, side bolsters, side clips, bushed pins, long bar with a massive solid butt stock. I will proof it for factory ammo +20%, which is about +30% my intended load. Barrels are shoe lump and massive as well, gun weighs 9+ pounds. Weight should be around 13 when I'm done.

Hardest thing thus far in the build has been locating all of the proper reloading equipment and supplies which includes brass and bullets. Everybody is out of everything, or never had it to begin with but advertised it anyway. I purchased every bit of brass I've been able to find....20 pieces of 3.25". There must a lot of .577NE's out there, because all the normal vendors are sold out.

2.75" Light Nitro, factory ammo is about 5500FPE@1950 and less than 10tons breech pressure. I will proof for this, but regulate for a lower load of 5000FPE and 1850FPS.

Have you tried buying brass from Buffalo Arms? I recently bought 100 rounds of Bertram .577 3" brass there, and their website looks like they are still stocked:

Buffalo Arms

The cost is not for the feint of heart; but if you want to play, you have to pay.

Hope this helps,

Also, would you consider a chronicle of your project on the "Building Double Rifles & Gunsmithing" Forum. I think all the members would enjoy seeing this project come together. Photos are highly recommended!

Apologies, I mis-read your ME requirements by a thousand ftlbs!

Sounds like the donor action should cut the mustard. I second Curl's request for photos, too!

SO your the one that bought all of them! :http://forums.nitroexpress.com/images/icons/grin.gif
grin)... I have a back order in with them now. I've been told that the bullets and brass are either on the boat or in customs awaiting processing. Some good news,I have been speaking with a bullet maker here in the US, and think have them convinced to start making heat treated lead gas checked .585" (.577 NE) bullets. These would be the "hammer head" style and be significantly cheaper and more abundant than Woodleighs. Weights will be in the standard 650 and 750 grain range. Seating depth, taper, matplat size are still being designed.

BlainSmipy, I too would love to follow your project, as I have contemplaited building a 577 Light Nitro on a very strong 12 bore frame. As of yet, I have not found the frame I will use.
My guess is the AYA 10 ga. will be plenty strong for your project as these were ment to handle heavy loads for serious use.
Good luck, and please keep us informed as to your progress.

Have you tried contacting Dieter Horneber directly for brass? His prices are high but quality is very good and he will ship directly to you. He usually has most everything in stock.

Could be....they all kinda look the same. I'm trying to procure from a fella I know a Beretta 10ga for a 577 build as well.

I looked long an hard for a really good 10ga, one that was not abused and would be heavy enough. This one was in really good shape, not the highest quality gun, but good enough. I'm probably going to have it re-heat treated using an Aus-treatment to strengthen it more (although it is already a brick sh--house). If you can afford it, the Greener Empire would work nicely. Possibly the Huglu 202B as well. They are long bars, quite strong, made of C1040 heat treated to 47B ( I talked to the engineers at Huglu and had the frame tested).

If all they had was 100 rounds, then yep, I got them all!

Today I was pleased that my RCBS .577 2 3/4" die set, shell holder, and trim die came in. I'm ready to gear up for the .577 2 3/4" BPE! I ordered the dies in late November.

Tough thing is that my injured shoulder isn't ready yet.

I do have enough use of my arm to start cutting off brass and getting it ready to load.

You know, I really don't know any reason anybody would buy dies for the .577 3" case. There is no doubt that I can trim and load .577 3" with the dies I just received. But on the other hand, you might not be able to load, and you sure can't trim a .577 2 3/4" case in a .577 3" setup.

Food for thought, because the die sets cost the same amount.

Did you swipe all of the 650 grain bullets too? Midway, Huntingtons, and Buffalo are out of them.

Anybody have any other sources for Nitro sized bullets?

No, I haven't persued any store-bought bullets. My rifle came with its original bullet mould numbered to the gun. I'll be starting with paper patched bullets from that mould.

Once I cast some bullets and find out what weight the rifle wants, then I might go shopping.

Last I checked Midway had the 650 soft nose Woodleighs. I now see that they are out. Glad I have that mould.

I suppose this makes no difference at all, but I just remembered that I bought my brass from Midway, not Buffalo Arms.

You just have to keep your eyes open, checking for availability often. When you see it in stock, do not hesitate.

Thanks,

I found some on AR, looks like 100 to 115 of RL15 and a 650 should yield right around 1850FPS; right where I want to be.

The 577 brass saga continues.

Jamison: DOA....makes only military ammo.

Huelsen Horneber: 4 month wait.

Bertrum: 2 month wait.

Bell: DOA

Kynoch: Would have to sell my house to buy five rounds.

I would take the Horneberbrass regardless of 4-5 months of waiting.

1) You get the finest brass made by man
2) 4-5 months of waiting will build you up with a strong character for the best

I use Horneber for my .333 Jeffery Rimless...sooooo much better than bertram

Finally, this weekend received all of my reloading accessories and I was actually able to reload for this beast. It only took two months of back orders to get everything. I think the dies were made to order from 4D....yeah I know their not the greatest, but they work and are inexpensive.

I ordered a box of 25 X 650 Woodleighs and 50 X 650 Hawk Bullets. The Hawks look as if they are made using a CORBIN press. Hopefully they will perform well, dang things cost $2.00 apiece. Friggin brass is $5.00 apiece. I think I now have the second largest .577 NE brass collection in the US with 60 pieces, Curl, having the largest.

Just waiting on the barrels from PAC-NOR to arrive to start the first prototype. I did pick up another good 10ga donor action, needs some trigger and stock work, but should be fine. Its even bigger and beefer than the first one.

Does any body know of a good wood worker I could send these stocks off to for some work?
