CAMEL HUNTS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA
      #98258 - 04/03/08 02:29 AM

I was talking to a pastoralist(rancher) who has over 1 million acres with an abundance of camel which are declared vermin here in West Aussie.
The deal he has is as follows:-

camel trophy fee=$500-00

Station meals and accomadation =$200-00 per day

Transport to and from station via road or air at your own cost(hire 4x4 vehicle or charter aircraft via Kalgoorlie)

Guaranteed to get trophy, also other vermin that requires culling(no fee) including donkey, dingo, fox, cats ,goats ect.

What are your thoughts?

Al

Alan, not sure about the fees.

But a friend of mine here, an older fellow {born in Southern Rhodesia as a matter of fact} who has a bunch of health problems, has hunted over there and shot a number of camel, along with the other stuff you note. He says for sheer tonnage shot, there is nothing like one of these large vermin hunts in Australia. The numbers of critters he's piled up over there is really quite enormous by North American standards. They must be fairly easy hunts, too, as like I say, he's had some health problems that have really slowed him down.

I need to call him up as I believe he just got back from another hunt {not sure the dates} and I'm sure he'll have some stories. I gotta ask him if he has any camel trophies...heads??

The country you would be hunting in is dry ,scrubby ,and isolated.

And no they are not an easy target especially where they are constantly culled.

I have seen them get wind of you, or see you from half a mile and all you can see is their dust as they depart.

Remember these animals roam over 1000's of millions of acres here in Aussie without any barriers or fences that can confine them.

However they do need water and in dry area's and times they come into pastoral country, knocking down fences and watering points ,including tanks and troughs.

The nearest civilisation to this station is litterally hundreds of miles away so that is an experience in its self.

As far as trophy's go,I would assume that plenty of photo's or maybe a bleached skull would be appropriate..

As for the hump ,the fatty gristle in the hump makes great dingo baits.

Sounds very good to me. 5 day hunt including two camels, A$2000, no where else would a international client get it that cheap.

Its like shooting a giraffe in Africa.I don't think it would be very exciting to shoot a camel but then i'm so used to seeing them every day that i sort of admire this animal. Its quite gentle, can pull heavy loads and in the desert its simply marvellous.Good hunting anyway.

Iqbal

The Australian camels are not stock animals but wild. Brought to Australia for the building of desert railways and telegraph lines, many were released when they were no longer needed. Now there are thousands of them roaming the desert and are a pest animal in some places.

Don't know if it is a true statement, but it was said "Australia is the only place in the world with wild camels. All other places having camels which are domestic stock."

How true is that statement?

Many do not know that dromedaries {i.e. one-humpers...AKA Arabian, not two-humper Bactrian} were also used, or rather, experimented with, by the US Army and some were released into the desert in various areas many years ago. I do not know what all happened to those critters but I have read that ranchers shot them {all?} on sight.

I guess for a time it could be said that there were wild camels here, too??? And donkeys, and horses. Still are some wild horses and donks left, but they are protected now. The horses are known as "mustangs" and the Feds still round them up and sell them from time to time.

I had a mustang for a while. Some are fine, mine happened to be meaner than Hillary at an Obama fundraiser.

Iqbal. If you are ever in Australia and want to see how easy it is ,be my guest but dont expect me to carry you back to camp after a days hunting on foot.
And if a bull camel decides you are to close to one of his females or he doesnt like the color of your eyes or what ever and decides to blow snot up your trouser legs,
then I will decide whether it is as easy as shooting giraffe and let you know iff you survive.

IS THAT A DEAL ?????????

You are probably right about Australia being the only country having wild camels. These were brought into Australia by Afghans, quite a few of which(Afghans i.e.)are still living there though they may not be recognised as they have blended into the local population.Regarding Alans challenge I will have to decline as I know that the camel, gentle creature it may be can turn vicious at times and has been known to crush the scalp of a human being. But hunting it,such a big target....I'll pass.

The people who came to Australia and whom were called "Afghans", were actually largely from people in parts of what is now known as Pakistan.

An elderly neighbour of mine has some "Afghan" ancestry.

It sounds pretty good Alan...

I have spent the last 12 months trying to set up a decent hunt fr international clients in the NT, where we know we can get licences and import permits for the guns - but to no end. Plenty camels butno one wants to play at the moment for various reasons. Havent bothered with WA - even though they have bulk amounts of camels there (the most) I shudder to think how much trouble it would be to run hunts for OS clients there...

Cheers
Matt

The wild Bactrian camel is still found in the Gobi desert but extremely endangered. http://www.edgeofexistence.org/mammals/species_info.php?id=8

G'day Martin,

Yes, it's a 64" Black Widow PLX "Bocote", 78# @ 29". The arrows were 704 grains total, carbon, wearing 2-blade broadheads - just one arrow used, and the big fellow was down and out after a hundred yard dash, maybe 30 seconds total.

I finally received an answer from the local police firearms branch regarding out of state hunters coming into Western Australia with their own firearms.
According to the powers that be this is how it works.

A permit must be applied for which costs $50-++
You must show that you have permission or proof of where you are going to hunt.

The permits are issued for a period of one calender month
at a time.

I will post an application form when I receive one.

Al:
You can download the form from the WA Police website. It is Form 6.

The forms are listed here

Just click on Form 6 and a PDF automatically opens. Can't lodge on-line though, so have to print, fill out, and mail.

Of course, I know nuthin' about hunting in WA.....!
