Early Article on Shotgun to DR Conversion
      #96397 - 09/02/08 08:04 PM

I know the concept has been around for longer in the US, but FYI here is the earliest article I have found, without looking too hard, on converting shotguns to double rifles.
Enjoy!

Gun Digest, 47th Annual Edition 1993. Anyone here know of any earlier articles? If so, please post details. The author claims his gun was built in the '70s, and I assume the BSS conversions started pre-1990 as well. There must be some nostalgia out there in print!

I noticed that this article tells about using cream of wheat as filler on handloads for doubles. Yes, in the early days, we did things like that, and learned the hard way what not to do. Several double rifles were damaged from using fillers such as plastic/cream of wheat and other cereals, so I thought it best to warn about NOT using such fillers. Ross Sefried (spelling) and a few other knowledgeable writers have warned about not using such fillers, so I am not alone in my observations. Clearly, in some cases, they cause dangerous breech pressures, and history has shown us the path, so don't read old articles suggesting their use, and have to learn the hard way once again.

I'd better point out that I tossed that article up for its nostalgic value, and for a bit of a chuckle at how things were done back then in ClaytonWilliamsville!

I would strongly recommend not doing most of the things he describes in that article!
