New GSP on the way - Blitzen
      #95097 - 25/01/08 03:24 AM

As many here would know I was looking to find a new GSP puppy to replace my dog whom died about a year ago. Well I visited a breeder a couple of days ago and had a look at some puppies and picked out a full liver coloured young dog pup. Just four weeks old at the moment, I pick him up in about four weeks time. Parentage has good genes and hunting and field trial credits so I am looking forward to him.

That's good news John. I'm sure you will both get into lots of trouble together.

Haven't got any photos yet. You will have to wait the four weeks or so.

The pup's kennel name for the records will be Pointgold Blitzen I believe, but I think I will probably name him "Romulus".

I also like the names "Fritz" and "Hannibal" but my wife doesn't like them as names.

Oh nice John, I didn't know you had lost your dog. Looking forward to pics and training discussion. I am on my last set of dogs now (so I say). I work so much I don't have the time they really deserve.

A photo of the puppy litter three weeks old, off the breeders website.

"Romulus" is one of the liver ones, probably the one to the right. The father "Obnoxious" is a liver and white dog, while the mother "Alcmene" is black.

A photo off the breeder's website of 'Mum', "Alcmene" or "Winki", making use of a convenient seat.

The origin of the name "Romulus".

Snipped - decided to call him Blitzen.

nice pics john

good historic lesson, allthough i think this was interperted with roman eyes:

The Franks Casket, an Anglo-Saxon hoard-box (early seventh century) shows Romulus and Remus in an unusual setting, two wolves instead of one, a grove instead of one tree or a cave, four kneeling warriors instead of one or two gesticulating shepherds. As the runic inscription ("far from home") indicates, the twins are cited here as the Dioscuri, helpers at voyages like Castor and Polydeuces. Their descent from the Roman god of war predestines them as helpers on the way to war. So the carver transfers them into the Germanic holy grove and has Woden’s second wolf join them. Thus the picture serves—along with five other ones—to influence "wyrd", the fortune and fate of a warrior king.

the nordic version, is a blot at odins holy grove. exsamplifide by his two wolfes gerer and freke.

i like the name though, it will be a mouthfull to scream in the fields but then you can allways adopt a whissel.

looking forward to hear more.

peter

Siegfried had multiple names from Siegfried/Siggi/Sieg, and all sorts of others which he all understood.

Romulus / Rommy / Rom should both work well.

Actually by a deep and rolling command Romulus can be broadcast loudly well.

I tried to train Sieg with three sorts of command - voice, hand signal and whistle. All three worked to varying degrees with different commands.

When really angry, he really understood, "You f@cking get here right now" and always obeyed that one. The F word worked the best and he knew he was in trouble if he didn't obey quickly. Not to be used in public places at the top of my voice though.

What works good with my dogs is when I say to them, "WTF are YOU doing? " They know they are in trouble!

Jolly Good old chap, doesn't look the part of a gentleman in tie and jacket, what-o?

PS Yes it is embarrassing to use, but in the heat of the moment ...

Actually I was glad I did NOT have a dog last week or two. In the middle of the night I went to change some irrigation taps and surprised five skippy's in the paddock next to the vineyard. My GSP used to chase kangaroos which is very dangerous for the dog.

An adult kangaroo can grip the dog with its forelegs and then rip its stomach out with the hind ones. Or if in water they will drown dogs.

Not much chance of the later at the moment as the roos have come into more settled country because of the drought.

John,

Can they rip open an aggressive dog breed like a mastiff type that have huge heads and bulky, heavy bodies?

New GSP here - Blitzen [Re: NitroX]
      #97064 - 20/02/08 02:26 AM

The little fellow has been with me since Saturday now. Will post some photos.

Have decided to call him Blitzen after all, which means lightning, or Blitz for short, so he will have the same name as his pedigree papers. I chose that name anyway from the criteria I was asked to pick from.

Very happy, alert and smart little puppy. Survived the 2 1/2 hour drive to Melbourne airport, the hour or so flight and the hour and half drive home. In the city I put him into a box without a lid expecting him to be quiet and had to fight with him with one hand the whole time as he wanted to get out and explore. Now his box has a grill as a lid.

When playing to keep him active and happy, he already is retrieving well bringing toy back to me and giving it to me, most times anyway. Usually only do it three times, as his attention span is not long. Starting to learn his name too. Not bad for eight weeks old. He has gone into a brief point several times already, usually at an insect or a leaf. As tail docking is now illegal here, he has a full length tail and I think it will be a dangerous whip from the looks of it. Already a little shadow following me around everywhere and constantly trying to get into my feet, a few times to his detriment. He will learn from that.

Toilet training is pretty good too, as he is in a small room with a stone tiled floor (also good for cleaning) for coolness, it has been very hot (around 40 deg C for three days), and obviously does not want to do anything in there so as soon as he is outside he goes. The small room looks like a good training aid for the future.

He arrived probably the worst time of the year, being the busiest three weeks of the year for work, but it is still working out pretty well.

Has proved to be a Houdini so far as well and escaped through barriers one night, and found him sleeping on one of my shirts in the wrong room. Has climbed up shelves, found him sitting on a third shelf on some boots in the laundry (where he spent his first night). Now he has solid wooden doors to keep him where he should be over night.

Have to keep him out of the bushes this summer as too many of the brown "wriggley sticks" are around coming to the house surrounds for moisture. Something when older he will definitely need training to avoid.

The young fellow, 8 weeks old, first trip outside on the evening of the day of his arrival. Having some fun in the garden.

First foray outside. The world is a big place.

Something interesting.

In a hurry.

What's that big eye thing?

PS That weedy area is what passes for a lawn in a sprinkler and irrigation ban drought environment. The weedy area behind is a lot of somewhat dead ferns, also from lack of water.

The young fellow just had his first experience with deer. Carried him out into the deer paddocks and the little bugger wanted to get down to chase them. Fearless (and stupid)!

How will you train him to avoid snakes in the future?
