ZG47 & VZ24
      #94880 - 21/01/08 04:15 PM

Can you tell me a bit about the two, ie; what is the difference and which is a better option for a custom job?
Regards,
ozhunter

The VZ 24 is a large ring standard length action. The ZG is a commercial small ring which should have integral dovetails on the ring and bridge.

The ZG was also specifically designed with a magazine which accomodates calibers as long as .30-06 and 7X64 and has a bolt handle and safety designed for low scope mounting in addition to the integral scope bases. I believe it has an adjustable trigger, as well. Some writers have described it as the best rifle ever produced by BRNO.

The Blue Book of Gun Values describes the ZG47 as follows:

.270 Winchester, .30-'06, 7X57mm, 7X64mm, 8X64S, 8X57mm, 9.3X62mm, or 10.75X68mm cal. large ring Mauser 98 action with 20mm dovetails on receiver ring and bridge, single trigger, hinged floorplate, rollover type safety, and bolt handle designed for low scope mounting, 23 1/2" barrel, checkered, pistol grip walnut stock with sling swivels and Schnabel forend, approximate serial range is 0-20,000, mfg. and exported world-wide between 1956-1962. Early specimans are marked BRNO MADE IN CZECHKOSLOVAKIA.

This model is generally regarded as one of the finest rifles that Brno has manufactured

I have two ZG47's (8X64 and a 9.3X62) both are large ring. I also have a BRNO model 21 (that looks very similar to the ZG47) that gun is a small ring. The VZ24 are military and although a good action they are crude when compared to the commercial guns. The BRNO model 21, 22, and the ZG47's are some of the very best of the post war Mauser type guns made.

I have owned several Brno Mod. 21 & 22 rifles. I can not remember all the letter designations but H was one of them. I have owned Mannlicher Models which fell into the 22 Model, and 21's with 21.5" barrels and others with 23.5" barrels. The letter "H" and some other letter stood for either the 21.5" or 23.5" barrel. Most of the 21's I owned had the integral dovetails on the ring and bridge. I have owned a few without the integral dovetails. These had a round ring and bridge. I have also owned a couple with the round ring and bridge that had German Claw Mounts milled into the ring and bridge and was told that these were special order rifles and came from the factory so equiped. All of the 21's that I have owned had double set triggers that were adjustable and a butter knife bolt handle. Also everyone I have owned were very well finished and polished with no tooling marks anywhere. The stocks were European Walnut and very slim and well fitted with tight straight grain. IMHO the Brno 21's were the best commercial made rifles I have ever seen on the market for the money.

As I understand it, the "H" designation indicated "half stock" and the "F" "full stock". I own two of each, two with the integral bases and two without. My only complaint is that the bolt handle, like that of the original commercial Mausers with "butterknife" bolt handles, is not really altered enough to allow for low scope mounting. I have to use Warne "high" rings to get the scope to clear the bolt handle, which is in keeping with the European idea of using "see through" mounts, allowing the iron sights to be used as primary sighting devices and the scope as secondary. The ZG47 and the subsequent ZKK 600-1-2 models changed that and allowed for truly low mounted scopes.

xausa,

Thank you for the help on the letter designation. I was brain dead last night , I guess I am brain dead most of the time. . Too many computers crashing in the last few days.

At any rate I think, do not hold me to this for sure, that the 21 H was the half stock rifle with a 23.5" barrel and the rifle with a 21.5" barrel, both with milled receivers. The 21 F had a full stock and 20" barrel with milled receiver. The 22 versions had the round receivers.
