Help Please
      #94424 - 16/01/08 11:32 PM

More questions I'm afraid. I am off to Africa in October to hunt some plains game and also a crocodile and a hippo. I have a Ruger single shot .30-06 in South Africa with my PH already so I need to take ammo for that. I am thinking about some custom ammo, 220 grain Nosler partitions or normal Federal 180 grain Nosler partition for the antelope/zebra. I MAY have bought a .470 NE in the next month or two which has been regulated for Federal factory ammo I believe. Assuming this is a 500 grain bullet at approx 2100 fps if I get Stars and Stripes in the US to build some custom ammo for me with both A square monolithics and Dead tough softs to the same specs would it be fair to say they will group pretty close. I am only interested out to 75 yds or so, the rifle will be a back up. I ask before I go ahead and order up the ammo (if I have bought the rifle) I was worried as I had heard stories about these A square bullets damaging the barrels of doubles but the chap at stars and Stripes said he has offered a "reward" for anyone who could send him a picture/X-ray proving this to be the case. all thoughts welcome and thanks in advance, Mike Bailey

For the 470 I would just buy Federal or contact Superior if you don't reload. I would never trust my hunt or safety to any bullet made by A Square.

Is the reward more than $8000? The cost of new barrels?

Mick, I agree with what you say, but where in the world will you find replacement barrels for $8000? Even shot barrels I have priced are > $14000 (and that was several years ago).

Mike Bailey, never even consider using monolithic bullets in a double rifle, no matter what anybody says.

Wow Mickey $8k is cheap, do you have a shop now? Owen quoted me $10,000.00 - $12,000.00 for a set of DR barrels and a year wait. JJ charges $15,000.00 at Champs..

MB,

Federal premium is the best there is in "factory" loads for DR's. Most UK makers use these to regulate double rifles these days, unless specified by the customer otherwise. If the gun in question was regulated with Federal premium, I would stick with that. Superior will make great custom loads for you but why go that route in this case? The A-Square monolithics are for shit in double rifles, regardless of any chicken shit reward to try and save face by this guy. I have seen stressed rifling personally in a 1998 built Purdey 375 magnum just last year from them, now the gun with factory regulated Federal premium won't even hit the 12" paper target at 100 meters, according to the owner. Also, its a good idea in my opinion to not use soft nose for dangerous African game, solids are the way to go. Penetration is the name of the game.

best, Mike

Smart boy!

Federal Premium can be ordered from the factory in the following configurations, for the 470 Nitro Express.

Trophy bonded bear claw
Trophy bonded sledgehammer solid
Woodleigh solid
Woodleigh weldcore sp

The Woodleigh solid is the way to go.

Cheers.

Hey guys

I just made an assumption the rifle would be a Krieghoff, Merkel, Searcy since he stipulated Federal. My estimate on barrels for them, not for a top name.

It has been about 10 years since I needed to buy new barrels for a rifle.

Before you throw ammo in your traveling bag, check the South African laws. I'm on my way over there for Buffalo in Botswana and just filled out the SAPS 520 Form. It has a place on pg. 8 to list the ammo you're bringing in to SA. Now, I'm not a lawyer (thank the good Lord), but I'm fairly sure that you cannot bring ammo into SA that's for a different caliber rifle than the one on the form.

Best to check with those that know.
