Very nice work.

It was well done to keep the weight down given the diamiter of the barrels.
Are the sleves solid or is there a gap between the shotgun barrel wall and the sleeve?

It is a hansome gun and you should be proud if it.

Regards

The bbls. were turned to a press fit at the chamber end and wasted in diameter until the last two inches of the muzzle end then both ends were tinned. Two holes were drilled & tapped for two grub screws into the fats and then the shotgun bbls were slotted and welded back up to the rifle bbls. That with the short length cut the weight considerably. I'm still looking as this is the second gun My Dad has done this way but I can't find a single picture of the turned bbls. Here's a oup;e more photos.

We unsoldered both ribs back to the forend lug then regulated the bbls.

The top rib was solid so we mounted Talley ruger ring bases and used a scope to regulate the gun. I took them off as I only shoot it with the irons but it didn't make a difference in the way the gun shoots. The rifle will group about 2" at 100 yds. with the scope and I can pretty much always get 2" 4 shot groups at 25 with the iron sights.

Good Grief!
I should have stated both groups are from a rest. We had over a thousand 300 gn. bullets, so that's what it's regulated for. It's a play gun. :^)

Great job, very nicely done indeed!
You sure have put a complete package together there with the scope and case etc.
Very good photos too and thankyou for posting them!
I know someone who is wanting (for some time now) to have his 12 gauge Greener converted to a double rifle and I wouldn't mind betting that your thread here inspires him to make a start on it!
By the way, what make lathe is that? Have you made all those knurled knobs for the fixed steady and other bits, or are they original?

What's your next project?

The lathe is a 70's vintage southbend 10k with a 4 1/2' bed. The knobs & fittings are orginal equipment, it's just in great shape and he treats it well.

I couldn't have custom ordered a greater dad. Talk about old school square shooter. He is my best friend. He will turn 80 his next birthday and still sharp as a tack. He raised two boys and two girls by himself working two jobs till all were out of school.

We are finishing what i believe will be the last big project, a 9.3x74 on a sauer frame.

gonna be a big jump off the soapbox now. :^)

I can only wish my kids feel the same about me.

Dale - thankyou for the explanation on the barrels being 'swamped'. This makes sense for sure. I hadn't thought of doing that - great idea.

Dale - did you get the liners from Trackofthewolf or were they full barrels to start? Track's liners are hammer forged and finely finished inside. They'd be easier to fit to a 20 bore, though as 5/8" is a normal liner size. They do have some at 13/16" (.687")which is a bit smaller than 14 bore and a few at 7/8", (.875")a bit larger than 8 bore Unfortunately, they don't have any at 3/4" (.750")
; I've been thinking of tackling this job on my bro's new lathe. I was thinking of a fast twist .444 (or longer) in a 20 bore double for black powder equivalent loads for 400gr. bullets.

Hey Daryl,

We used Douglas button rifled 1 1/4" full blanks 26" long. That way we could turn it to the dimensions we needed. The gun was 12ga. so we reammed the chamber to square it up and leave a shoulder at the forcing cone. Then pulled a straight reammer through the bores to true them at the muzzles. If you turn the bbls. on centers, you'll want extra length to trim off the ends.

Thanks Dale - excellent work. My brother's new lathe will be perfect for doing this type of work - the rusty gears in the brain pan are already grinding out some plans.

Thanks for your interest but to be honest, we just like it too much. A good friend has a charging buff on a steel cable at his farm and introduced my 14 yr. old son to "charge" shooting. He would have a heart attack if I let it go, he has become as bad as I am about claiming his father's guns. :^) Besides, that's how I con him into reloading.

In regards to making another to sell, I have a hard enough time getting Dad to do all my projects.

Hi Dale,

That's one beautiful job, it's a shame that more people don't use their talents like you and your Dad. The case looks great also, does your "friend" do them for a living or just as a hobby, as I wanted to have a new case fitted out if he is interested ??

Chapuisarmes,

My friend has an upholstery shop and I had talked to him several times about doing a case and he said he would try it. I took him the case, several photos of fitted cases and some red felt along with the gun and scope. I gave him free reign to do what he wanted as it was pretty much an experiment. He isn't a gun man at all and decided the gold color would be better, which was fine I guess. He has an industrial band saw as he does a lot of mine work and he used a neoprene type rubber instead of wood to form the inside with. He said it was easy to fit as he could cut and glue the forms to fit. It is soft and giving but makes the case heavy.
I asked him about doing more on a cost by job basis and he stated "No Thanks" that it just took too much time.

Hi Dale,

Thanks anyway, it was appreciated that you asked him. I have had a Pelican 1750 case fitted out using a process of "Milling" the rubber to the appropriate size and then "Flocked" It takes a Double Rifle and scope Plus a take down rifle and scope, and yes, it does become a little weighty but it sure is safe and at least the Pelican has wheels !!!!
