9.3x62 Takedown Update 19.01
      #93394 - 04/01/08 12:27 PM

This is very much work in progress, but I had a few moments to take some pictures and wondered if you might like them. She is a 1916 Kornbush&Co. GEW 98.
She was sitting unloved in the corner of a local gunshop, having been turned sometime I would think in the 70's into a 7.62 target rifle.

I wanted a takedown as I like traveling without a long case. So she seemed a good project gun.
Eventually she will wear the Rigby apature sight copy that I got from Rusty.

Hope you like her.

Regards

Well,I certainly like her. That will be a nice
travelling rifle when it's all done. I am almost
at the same point with my takedown project in
.404J but you are a bit further along. How are
you going to latch the barrel assembly and receiver
together?

Bramble,

Very nice.

What material are you going to use for the forend tip? Ebony?

I always salute those with the skill to build their rifles themselves. Beats buying the most expensive rifle in the world because you built it yourself!

Do keep the pictures coming as you complete what promises to be another masterpiece.

Very nice indeed.

It looks very much like my Manton 404 Take Down.

I am not plannig to use a forend tip, you can just see in the last photo a faint curved pencil line that indicates the shape of the forend.

I plan to make a sliding dovetail latch with ball and spring detents. I will post it seperatly when I make it.

Thanks all for the encouraging comments.

I love it.

Will the barrel thread be grooved or an uninterrupted thread?

The threads really wouldn't have to be interupted if the rifle was kept without non-quick detach scope or kept iht irons. The interupted threads do make for a slick barrel'd action, though. Unlock, twist, remove or replace and lock. Cool! - not diffuclty to do, either.
: Nice piece of wood too, English or French? A friend had some English without any red tones, just like French walnut.

That is a very nice piece of work, keep posting as I have been thinking about building one and you just kicked started me. I am really interested in how you will lock the two pieces together. I have an action sitting in the safe that has been begging to be turned into a 35 Whelen.

Bramble,

With or without a forend tip, she looks equally beautiful. I know what you mean. Keira Knightley looks beautiful with her clothes on. Without them she is no less lovely!

That is a very nice rifle and the new pictures just show us that something spectacular is coming shortly.

Thanks for sharing the pics here and good hunting!

Are you planning any other chamberings for it? Or will she remain a one caliber rifle? How about a custom case?

Hey Mehulkamdar

If you can get me a night with Keira, you can have the rifle !

Here are a couple of pictures of the fixed part of the catch in the rough just off the mill.

I wasent planing other chamberings as it would be a bitch to get another set of mateing faces to match.....but now you mention it I have a 8mm barrel, reamer, and enough nice wood for a forend...hummmm.

Regards

Bramble,

One thing for certain, you don't shy away from major projects. It really looks great and is going to be one fine rifle when you're done. You are quite a craftsman.

Well to say that I make a living at it at the moment would be a gross exageration. However in view of the many projects that I have done the police were kind enough to grant me a RFD as a manufacturer a few weeks ago so I can now take on work for other people. My living currently is from my small building services and engineering company.

Some photographe of the ball and spring detent forend /barrel latch. It has not yet been cut to length. The pin protruding from the square end engages in the forend/barrel plate to lock latch, barrel and woodwork together. The barrel and latch are full length bedded into the woodwork to make it all a rigid unit and hopefully give repeatability of return to zero. The latch and its carrier are case hardened and stoned in to give zero (or as close to it a practicable side shake.

Bramble,
You obviosly know how to get the best from your workshop machinery!
Not forgetting all the hand work required for a job like this, plus all the initial design etc!
Very neat work!
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the work as it all comes together.
Great choice of cartridge too!

Well got the latch finished and installed tonight. Open and closed photos from several angles for those interested.

Thank you to all the responders for their encouragment.

That's going to be a great looking rifle and already looks like it wants to go hunting.

I like the way you're going about fabricating the latch. The 9.3x62 is my favorite cartridge and I hope it rewards your hard work with a great shooting rifle.

Flippin hell Soutie, where do you get all the time to do this? Now I know why you did not come over in Deceember. You will have to make a plan to bring her to Africa, I would love to shoot her, a real beauty.

You are a talanted craftsman. When you get here I have a lot of questions to ask you, anyway to much for the forum or on email.
