Barnes makes a 220 gr round-nosed solid for the 30-06. I'm curious as to your intended usage?

Take care, Tom

Hornady used to make them - not now?

Daryl, Hornady makes a 220 gr soft round nosed bullet, but no solid. At 2300 to 2400 fps I suspect that bullet will go through any soft skinned animal, but I haven't tried it. I seem to recall that Hemingway liked it (or one like it) for lions.

Woodleigh makes a .30 caliber 220 gr solid (FMJ).

Available (in the USA) at MidwayUSA:

I think that Goodnel used to make monolithic hollowpoints

I would assume your PH will have all the gun and ammo needed for a situation like that if it arises..IMHO...

If the solids are for safety purposes, then you probably should be considering carrying something like a .375 with solids and using that for your plainsgame with softs. Otherwise, stay out of your PHs way if the shit hits the fan!

On the other hand, monolithic hollowpoints can be mighty effective on plainsgame. However, in a 30-06 so will premium grade expanding bullets.

Have you considered the 220 gr Nosler Partition?

I have on hand the 220 gr partition. Haven't shot them yet. I think they would be as close as a solid you could get in 30 cal. I myself haven't heard of any solids in 30 cal.

The partition -as great of a bullet it is---is not a bonded type bullet and was not designed to keep a high weight retention compared to todays bullet designs--Per my converstaions with Nosler on previous visits, to the Partition is to maintain approx. 60% of its weight--I would think if you can not find a solid in 30 caliber--a bullet similar in construction to a Barnes would out perform the Partition as to penetration--as the Barnes typically retains 85 to 90% of its weight--especially in lieu of the lower velocities presented by a 30-06 versus a magnum type caliber

This can also be confirmed by bullet comparison tests that I have read-- I have some literature at my home--when I go home this evening I will see if I can find it and report the findings to you..

The upside of carrying Nosler Partitions is absolutely splendid performance on thin-skinned game. The downside is perhaps somewhat less penetration on heavy game. Since there is usually insufficient time to swap ammo when something happens, the Partition offers a good compromise.

There ya go, with Woodleigh. I'd also consider choosing the heaviest Barnes "X" of Failsafe for deepest penetration along with some cavitation.
; Partitions usually lose the front part back to the web - something that doesn't happen with the B and F's. We've found in the smaller calibres, they will lose a petal or two - but still penetrate similar solids and generally in a straight line which is the most important aspect - deep and straight.
: I'm with Ripp on this one.
