Can this be my new BIGBORE home?
      #9289 - 18/02/04 03:00 AM

Hello ALL,
I am a newbie here....I am leaving AR due to the troll problem.
I collect Big bores as well as hunt big game in north America and Africa.

I know some of you already from AR.

The project I am working on now is a .425 WR rifle I picked up a few weeks ago.
Please if you have any info on this to share let me know.
I will post my story soon

Thanks

Urdubob

Hey nice to hear from you. Isn't it tiresome to see every other subject posted by Mike375 or ScottS or Judy or Mauser? I tend to skip all of the crap even though I've got them on ignore.

Hello all!

I've been checking this forum out for a while and am glad to see some more traffic.

AR has often been compared to Saeeds house, where we are all guests. We all should behave as guests. Most of us have tried to.

But, Saeed, IMHO, needs to clean his house and not ask some folks back or his other guests will find somewhere else to visit.

Glad to be here, Joe.

Well I can't say I didn't suggest to Saaed to clean out his tent. It's his forum and he has deceided to not do anything about the TROLLS. I have always wondered why. I came to that forum to talk guns and hunting not to have to listen to lies and phonies. My decision is to leave. I'll bet all the decent people follow us here. When the ScottS and Mike 375 Trolls follow us here I hope you guys will deal with them swiftly.-Rob

Yes I Know,

While trying to say good bye gracefully... I was attacked by one of the 45/70 African Big game hunters. My last post was to send him to remington to compare foot pounds of energy.

Logic does not come in to play when you disprove the "45/70 ia a BIG GAME round"

Greetings

It might be worth remembering that since this is quite a new site.....

Troll type activity is generated by those who profess to hate such activity. Note that troll activity on AR is mainly centred around the Big Bores forum.

I would not have thought this thread was a good way to start things. I noticed a couple of other new threads on this site have also run with the troll theme.

Mike

Hi Mike

I hope we can have constructive discussions on the NE.com forums.

I can agree with you on one thing. I also really dislike seeing the word troll on these forums or continually on other forums.

I think it is a real shame what some people have done to the AR forums and the rudeness to Saeed's as its host. Its a pity that some people have something so lacking in their lives that they need to disrupt and destroy rather than join in constructive discussions.

Answering or discussion with these sorts of people is just a waste of time. No one stops to talk to the mad drunk on the side of a street. You walk by and look the other way. Answering back just gets you a face full of spittle and abuse or worse. Internet trolls are the same and should be treated that way.

I don't want the NE.com forums to be used to rubbish AR so perhaps members could get back onto topics of hunting, shooting, doubles, guns and other enjoyable topics.

Mike, great way to start off your posts too.

I have seen some good posts by you overtime on ballistics and reloading. Perhaps some of these would be preferable to talking about AR, trolls or whatever and also other members might find these sorts of topics more enjoyable too.

G'day Nitro,

Well it looks I have big bore activity coming my way than I first though at Ed Hubel and RNS have go me caught up in the 550 Magnum!!

I spoke to RNS on the phone the other night and I just need to check that 50 cal plus is OK at the SSAA Silverdale range. I am 99% that it will be OK and it is only 50 BMG that is banned. If that part is OK then I will send bank draught over straight away.

For sometime I was trying to think of something to do that would give me a rifle that was preferably on a Wby but diffeent to the factory upgrades. The 458 Lott crossed my mind a few times but somehow, at least for, the 458 Lott does not go hand in hand with Wby actions. Over the years I have owned three different M70 458s and like the straight case big bore to muck about with.

So the 550 Magnum popped up and it is ideal because:

1) Being a straight case based on the 460 makes it ideal for a Mark V.

2) No Bertram brass type problems. In fact neck a few 460s up and have a few shots and make general fool of yourself and then when you get home neck the cases back to 460

3) With recoil limitations it will mean from a practical point of view that it will equal the ballistics of the larger case capacity 585 Nytati.

I think it has lots of potential for playing about with paper patch bullets. Hakwk is doing 600 grainers in their .035" jacket and I think I have some idea where such bullets could be applied.....and I don't mean big game

Money wise it is a good deal. Long chambered barrel and contoured barrel, front and rear sights, loading dies all together works out at $1235AUS, say $1630AUS if I get hit for duty and GST.

Mike

Better you than me. My heavy double .450 gives me enough headaches shooting it supported for regulation test loads.

A .550 Magnum. Not for me.

Nitro

I have two leather bags with lead shot. Wished I had used them 20 years ago.

One bag weighs about 15 pounds and I sit it on a sand bag that is behind the butt of the gun. Actually, the lead sinks towards the bottom of the bag and thus the tickness of of bag between your shoulder and the butt is not that great. Once you are use to it you would use it for about anything.

I have a second bag that holds about 50 pounds of shot and is generally square in shape. When using this bad your arm pit more less goes over the bag. But so far I have hardly ever used as the 15 pound bag has done the job and I have used it on 460 with the Pendleton Dekicker (which is not much better than Magna Porting) and also 416 Wby with the brake removed.

On a bench I sit well back from the scope.

Probably an even better system is the one that John S on AR uses. He has a strap that goes around the butt and is attached to bags of lead shot on the bench.

I have never found accuracy to be lost as I have tested the bags with bench style guns in calibres like 300 Winchester.

Of course things would be different with a double rifle.

Mike

I use a Rand Elite shield. This item is vastly superior to the more common Past pads.

I was turned on to it by an old BPCR shooter. He's a paraplegic and whacks the steel way out there with a 45-90 from a damned wheelchair. Got him a nice bull elk year before last on his own.... wheelchair and all. Somebody forgot to tell him he's handicapped!

They are available from Buffalo Arms at:

http://www.buffaloarms.com/

Here's a pic:

I use this when I compete in local informal practical rifle shoots. Everybody else uses 308s while I play with a 375. I shot 60 full power rounds once from the prone with this shield.

Really helps when working loads for the 500

Holmes,

I have never had any problem with recoil and shoulder. When I fee recoil it is more to do with whiplash. Do you think those sort of pads provide any reduction in whiplash.

I can't say for sure, Mike. I do know I can fire many more rounds from my 500 without getting the 'car wreck' headache when I use the shield. I'm a skinny dude and I think the shield helps dissipate the shock to the anatomical system.

I don't usually bruise much even without the shield. I think what helps me the most is the shield padding acts like the flesh most normal people have on their bones!

Sometimes during bench sessions I find myself tensing my neck and shoulders in preperation for the recoil. The shield certainly minimises this tendency.

A 550 mag That ought to stop a 'roo, eh?!!
