Friends,
Don S tells me that this is one of his favourites and I can see why. A Mauser Type S from Walter Roll. Don would post more details shortly.
Good hunting, everyone!

This rifle was built in 1946 during the French occupation of the Mauser factory in Oberndorf. Only a couple of hundred rifles were completed by Walter Roll with special serial numbers containing his initials. They were sold to Officers of the French and American occupying forces. Walter Roll was the last director of the sporting arms department at Mauser before the factory was destroyed. This Type S is in 6.5x57 and has a Zeiss Zielacht 8X scope.

Don- The bolt knob looks round like a mil bolt. Is that typical of the Roll Mausers??

The military bolt handle was common on late war sporters. The underside of the knob was flattened and grooved. At this point, production was stopped and parts were taken from existing inventory. On this rifle all numbers match including the stock. It also features Roll's Ersatz soldered on square bridge. If you have Speed's first book, check pg. 293-294.

Nice piece. I heard of these hunting rifles made under French occupation but I never saw one before.
