Have you seen the new 460 S&W round. It is the most powerful handun round ever. I will try to get more info.

So here are the specs;

200 grain bullet at a MV of 2330 fps and ME of 2400 ft. lbs.

bullet diameter .454", rim diameter .520", case diameter .478", overall case length 1.800", cartridge overall length (COL) 2.300". The official SAAMI maximum average pressure (MAP) is 65,000 psi!

It can also shoot the 454 Casull and the 45 Long Colt

The 460 doesn't really seem to offer much over the 454 Casull, at least to me. Smith is using a super lightweight bullet for a big 45 case (even the 45 Colt loads typically exceed 300 grains now) to get outlandish velocities while producing ridiculous pressures in a boat anchor size handgun. At least with a 45 Colt or 454, the handgun is packable without giving yourself a hernia.

Still, the 460 with heavier bullets will probably be a decent hunting handgun, much like a TC Contender or XP, but like the 460's bigger cousin the Smith 500, seems just too big (in the X frame) for a backcountry sidearm.

Energy numbers really don't mean much of anything IMO.

I have to agree with dphillips.I would love to have that kind of power in a handgun that does not need a set of wheels. I am hoarding my rubles for a freedom arms in .45 or.50. A handgun needs to be available when it is needed, if you can't pack it reasonably then it will not be there when needed. I guess it would be fine as the primary weapon in a hunt, but would still be a bitch to carry around with you. I would rathe carry a carbine of some kind. What kind of penetration will a .50 200 grain bullet give you on anything the lhe least bit tough??????

Sorry pet peeve of mine: It's not a LONG Colt, it is just a 45 Colt. At some point some writer decided shooters were too stupid to recognize the difference between the 45 ACP and the 45 Colt, so he put "Long" in the title. That ain't right!

Another consideration is the .460 Smith & Wesson --this is an amazing caliber-- you can shoot either the 460 S&W, 454 Casull or 45 Colt all in the same gun.. for what you are shooting I would go for a hard cast bullet--when I am bow hunting here in MT, because of the grizzly's, I often carry either a 44 with 300 gr cast bullets or a S&W model 60 in 180 gr cast bullets..

On the latest article I read on the .460 in "Rifle Shooter" magazine-- it states this is a true 250 yard handgun if needed--it has more energy at 200 yards than the 44 mag has at the muzzle..you can purchase them with a 4, 5 or 7 1/2 inch barrel..

As mentioned above---another really good idea, was the Marlin guide gun--very short carbine and can be had in 45-70 or 450 marlin--with handloads, they have very formidable stopping power..

i like the Ruger Super blackhawk stainless .44 remington magnum, magnaported with 4 5/8" barrel. great carry characteristics but needs pachmayer or hogue grip with heavy handloads. comfortable while sitting and easy to draw in a hurry with the right rig.
