458 Win Mag on a 98 action?
      #91355 - 12/12/07 08:41 PM

Does anyone here use a 458Win Mag on an original Mauser 98 action?I have a old 8x57mm,VZ 24 Mauser 98 action on hand.I had originally got the rifle to butcher for a 338-06 but have since gotten the bug for a really large bore chambering and was thinking about a 458 Win Mag on a 22inch barrel with a really nice monte carlo style walnut stock and a 2x7 Leupold and no iron sights.Anyone have any tips on proceeding with this?or things I should be aware of with building a large bore rifle?
I built a beautiful 25-06 Ackley Improved two years ago on an identical action with a 26 inch barrel and I have the bug for building my own custom rifles. But anything above a 45-70 is unfamiliar ground to me ..i.e 458 Win Mag,etc
Thanks in advance for any tips or help or just general chit chat you would care to add about this.
Gene

Putting up a 458 on a M98 is straight forward. Only caveat for the VZ 24 would be the magazine length...I believe it's about 3.2", which is short for a 458, but ok for a 25-06. The mag box is also too narrow for a belted mag to feed perfectly. If you could get a proper belted mag bottom metal, the action body could safely be altered to accomodate 458. Check with Numrich. It usually ends up cheaper to start with a commercial action made for the short mags, but you can certainly make up a fine rifle on the VZ 24.

As Otto said the m98 will work just fine. I've been using one since 1976.
; Also, the action rails will have to be opened slightly, the bolt face opened up and extractor ground back and re-shaped slightly.
; The bolt should be cut off and a new one welded on to allow an action mounted scope if that's a goal.
; Since you already have the action, action cost isn't a concern. The above work should not cost more than about $100.00 if you have to have it done, but undoutedly, some gun smiths will want more.
; Were you to re-barrel and chamber for a .338/06 IMP to .375/06IMP, the action rails and bolt will function just fine, and only the bolt replacement and scope base holes drilled and threaded.
; The .338/06IMP, with a 24" to 25" barrel will come very close to .338 Mag factory ammo, while the .375/06IMP will come within 50fps of factory .375H&H ammo, my last two have quite easily. Incidently, the .35/06IMP can exceed the original .375H&H ballsistics by up to about 75fps.

Thanks for the info gents.I am listening/reading with both ears open about this.I appreciate your insight into building it.Daryl I still want to build a 338/06.I want something a little different than the run of the mill 338 Win Mag,everybody and his brother has..A 338/06AI would do the trick..I am a devout handloader and load for two other improved cartridges already 25-06 AI and 223AI.I have written quite a bit about loading and shooting the improved cartridges I use on my handloading board.I am sold on the improved cartridges.
Thanks again gents,I appreciate everyones thoughts about this build..

Timberghozt - nice idea. I do not have any experience with big bore rifles but here is my $0.02 worth.

I plan to do a similar project in the next couple of years. I would pick the cartridge first & then find the action. If I built a big bore rifle on a Mod 98 action (which is my first choice), I'd go for a classic caliber like a 404 Jeffrey or a 10.75X68 (both use 423 diameter bullet) or even a 450 Rigby. I am not sure if the VZ 24 action will handle these rounds. Since you are planning to do the 338-06 AI anyway, you might want to consider keeping this action for that project & sourcing a large ring Mod 98 action for the big bore (cost about $350?). I saw a recent post on ntiroexpress forum where some one in Australia has built a beautiful 404 Jeffrey on a mod 98 action with nice engraving & fantastic wood work done by Waghorn. I still keep dreaming of that rifle, though I might not have so much engraving on it.

The other issue is sights. If I was planning to hunt with this big bore rifle, I would definitely have GOOD open sights. That seems to be the universal opinion of serious hunters with experience in big bore rifles. I'd also go for a Leupold 1.5-5X scope & have the option of using low power if hunting Dangerous game at close range. I have several Leupolds & 2-7Xs sit on my 222, 7mm08 etc. I have a 1-4X on my 9.3X62 Mauser. I would not need the 7X setting for a big bore rifle. The 375 H&H is the largest caliber that I would use such scope setting for (it is actually a medium bore & not a true big bore) & I would get a 2.5-8X VX3 for that.

Good luck with your project & let us know how you get on.

As to sights, I still prefer a 2X Leupold on the large bore bolts. There is enough magnification to shoot big game at any range needed. Whe chekcing ammo off the bags, 2X allows shooting within 1/10" of 12X, accuracy wise, so there's no detriment there either.

Most appreciated gents.I will be having Jim Myers do most of the work on it for me.I has done some work for me in the past and is as fine a gunsmith as I have ever ran across.
you can see some of his work here,
www.oneholegunworks.com
I looked as some of the botton metal pieces online in the 400 plus dollar range that look like what I want on my rifle.
Nakihunter,I was wondering about adding iron sights to my rifle.I noticed a lot of folks having iron sights on their dangerous game rifles.Perhaps I jumped the gun by deciding against them?I have to leave for a few days fellas ,I will ponder more on this rifle while gone to do my job.I appreciate all the input you fellas have to offer about this...

Sounds like a great project. I think I'd be wary of using a scope that didn't go lower than 2X on a DG rifle though... Charges look big enough without magnification!!
