Holland & Holland 300 rook mfg date
      #91330 - 12/12/07 01:25 PM

I have a H&H 300 rook rifle, side lever opening, 27 1/2" octagonal barrel, 3 leaf sights, 50,100,150 platinum lines, case hardened reciever, ejector, checkered pistol grip stock of figured walnut & steel butt plate & pistol grip cap, central hammer, checkered wedge fastened splinter forend, sling eyes.
Barrel reads: winner of all the field rifle trials London 1883. Some have told me that this rifle was probally built for Holland & Holland by Webley. Bluing is great & even patina on the case hardened reciever. This rifle has a fantastic bore. I am looking for opinions on the value and date of manufacture. Also looking for information on where I might buy 80 grn lead bullets for it.
S/N # is 9455. This gorgeous little rifle is a new aquissition and I am trying to get up to speed on it. All info greatly appreciated.

Could you please post some photos. Sounds like a facinating rifle. Have you had the bore slugged?

If you need help there, just PM me & I'll give you my email ID. You can email the photos to me & I am happy to post them for you.

I just received the rifle this week and haven't had the time to do anything yet but look it over, I will be getting some time away from work over the holidays to doo some gun work. I have just received my cerosafe for chamber casting & slugging. I have several rifles in the waiting line to be done, the other being a Heinrich Scherping 500 BPE back action double gun that I am really excited about as it is about the same age as this rook rifle and is # 6 in my Scherping collection
10.25x60Rx12 ga Cape gun with Damascus shotgun bbl & fluid steel rifle, set trigger & diopter sight
16x16x9.3x72R Drilling back action, set trigger, extremly light drilling
500 BPE double, Back action, both triggers set, diopter sight & moon sight
1918 sidelock Hammerless drilling, 16x16x9.3x72R
98 Mauser 8x60S, bbl hex to round with integral rib, double triggers, claw mount kahles scope
22 falling block target pistol, color case action, double set triggers, 12" hex barrel (built 1925)
as well as other makes but if you pass along you address I will forward you pic's (haven't taken any of rook yet but will soon as I several new aqquisitions.

I just had a look in Nigel Browns book British Gunmakers vol 1 London
Serial number 8999 is 1887
they state that numbers 9,000------10,000 unused and 10,000-----10849 missing
rook rifles 10,850--10,999
" " " 13,000--13,999
" " " 17,400--17,999
the above block of numbers have no dates

Upon looking in Colin Greenwood's book .The Classic British Rook & Rabbit Rifle
a review is done on rifle 9454 which is one number before yours
In the same chapter it states "The problem of identifying the real maker of any rook rifle are exacerbated by the fact that H & H records of rook rifles are incomplete"

Even though a rifle may have been made elsewhere the supplier had to meet Hollands high standard.
" The rifles were made to H & H specs and were rigorously checked ,shot and regulated at the factory before being accepted."
I hope this may be of some help
good shooting
