Missed a great deal on Double Rifle, A HEYM 470 NE , no less that sold for $7000.00 a few days ago on Gunbroker.com
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=86550473
Dunno if it was a legit gun and the gun not stolen, etc but a $17,000 gun for $7000 is a h*lluva deal indeed-

Went and looked at a Rigby today in .470--awesome shape---really would like to take it for a spin at the local range---something about a "Rigby"--was built in the 1920's... Ripp

What are you waiting for ?
They are superb guns.
Was it a Rising Bite Sidelock or a Webley Sidelock or Boxlock ?

It's hard to miss it considering he put a big arrow pointing towards it and described it as such in the text.
Hence my comment about Ducks !

Do you want to post the price or not ?
I'll leave it to you.
But yes, definately on the high side but as I said, I'm not currently up to date with the pricing until I look around.

Well, nobody is pouncing on it, as they've had it for some time.
Like the rest of the London trade, Rigby couldn't make any money building their own boxlocks, so they bought them in from the Birmingham trade, and most were bought in complete. Like any other "London" boxlock, while the name of the retailer matters to a degree, it's foolhardy to ignore what an individual gun actually is. For example, some Army & Navy boxlocks came from Westley Richards and Webley & Scott, while others came from much less respected gunmakers, and are not of equal quality. Holland & Holland's boxlock DRs were also from Webley. Regardless of the retailer's name, each gun must stand on it's own.
Rigby's best boxlock DRs came from Webley, and a few from Wilkes. From the photos alone, this "Class D" is NOT from Webley, nor is it built on a Webley action, nor is it from Wilkes. While this piece is a bit of a mystery, the action is almost certainly Osborne's version of the screw-grip, not Webley's (I've owned both), meaning that Osborne probably built it. They're of decent quality to be sure, but not up to Webley's standard. In the current US market, were it a Webley built gun in the same condition, maybe $27500. As it is....I think Ripp's guesstimate is more generous than mine would be.

If you like it, it fits and it handles well and is balanced to your liking, do your best to negotiate a better price, but buy it.
If you want to buy an investment, go to your broker and buy some of the depressed financial stocks.
Here's an idea, take what you negotiate from the asking price and buy some of the harder hit financial stocks. If you get around to selling the rifle before you die, but at least 18mos from now, the financial stocks will have covered any "over" payment times some.
Mere $'s isn't a sufficient reason to hold back, if you've got the $'s.

I thought the top view of the Rigby looked very much like
the OSBORNE rifles I've seen and held, including my own.
