DANGEROUS GAME WANNABE'S
      #56634 - 08/05/06 11:15 PM

Would anyone consider hunting large boar with a pistol /rifle as a DG substitute? Things can get pretty lively when a big boar charges.

Had a buddy hunting a big boar wanting to get at a sow in heat. Took 7 shots from a SKS 7.62 x 39 to put the boar down after he charged!! He was very lucky as his young teenage son was in danger as well.

Are there other potentially dangerous animals out there besides big bears and cats?

Pig hunting is always good fun and great practice for DG hunts.

Used my .375 and my .450 on the last three pig hunts. Though my .308 BLR is also very lively and handy too.

I have often hunted Pigs with Big Bores (375 and up to 577),
partly as it goes with Buff Hunting but it is also
good practice for DG hunting.

The other thing I hae found useful is when culling Kangaroos
to use a DR as it can get fast and furious and is very good DR Practice.

Get as much practice on game as you can with any f your DG guns.

Not to suggest that 7.62x39 is a good boar gun, but was there an issue with shot placement perhaps? I'd use my .338, if only because I'm confortable with that rifle right now.

Years ago George C. Nonte wrote an article on hunting hogs in Tennesse (I think) with a brand new Series 70 Colt 1911 loaded with 190 gr Super-Vel ammo. I liked the story so much I bought a nickel finished Colt, but never made it down to hog country.

I've had a couple of hairy experiences with hogs but generally they are not aggressive. A .45-70 is an excellent hog round but so is the lowly .30-30. I normally go out with a .243 and a .50 - .58 caliber muzzleloader... but I always carry a revolver for back up.

Well let me tell you how some of these southern boys do it a pit bull a bay dog and handcuffs, boyyyyyy you talk about squeeling muddyy in your face ,all out battle the smell of the animal ,your pulse racing.....some here use a knife, aint nothing but a thang......then when that gets old try an alligator 12-13 feet long, 1100-1200 pounds of killing machine armor plated stuck with a crossbow and fighting it by hand in a 14 foot boat at night.thats what us poor southern boys do for fun....i have climbed half way up the north american tree but find the most fun here in the swamps and rivers of florida.Been through all that and was almost killed by a 60 lb button buck that ran out and hit my 4 wheeler broke my shoulder fractured my femur in numerous places and had 3 brain bleeds put me out of work for 2 years, but i am back....life is a dangerous game. more people are attacked by whitetail deer than all bears put together.look at all the tree stand injuries and deaths.but thats why we love it it gets our pulses racing ,if it does not quit now .sorry for rambeling need some time in the woods i guess...........

You crack me up...!

There was an interesting video-clip doing the rounds of the internet a year or so back, showing footage of a bowhunter being trashed by a cranky buck, went for several minutes. All front hooves, didn't use the antlers at all.

Top marks to who-ever shot the video, didn't offer a helping hand at all!

If you can get the pig to charge, I think that would be loads of fun.

I think the best place to hunt big boars is California out of Palo Alto area.

They are the russian boars in the wild there and they are 650lbs +

Big revolver or a lever action works best in the thick.
