New User - Mauser Help

Can anybody provide me with some details about a Mauser 98 I have? It is a Mauser 98 action and says DEFOURNY Liege, 8x60, with belgium proofmarks. Will post some photos soon. Any help will be highly appreciated.

thanks paul,forgot to mention it is a commercial sporter with 24 1/2 inch barrel and there is an "S" after the 8x60.

The 8x60(S)= S means it has the current .323 8mm bullet, the J or I bores are .318 and they are much harder to find bullets for reloading. They are a great rifle I have an H Scherping built in Hanover Germany in 1926.

herbertnb,
i knew that the defourny is a sporter style rifle ,just so you know when refering to a mauser sporter as a (commercial sporter), this term is usually reserved for the sporters that were built at the oberndorf factory, so not to sound like a nitpicker, even though the defourny is a sporter and probably well built ,it is not a (comm. sporter).anyway look up martini & hagn he is in canada and builds incredible sporting rifles and always has some good stuff for sale and if you like these type rifles you need jon speeds book ,it the mauser bible....paul

The 8x60 is the 8x57 case slightly lengthened so as to be a legal calibre where military calibres were banned.

Paul - thanks for the info on commercial sporter, I thought any non military mauser action is a commercial sporter. I am learning.

i could very well be that your gun is built on a military action, certain things like the bolt handle ,lenght of cocking piece, type of bottom metal or if it just stamped
waffenfabrik mauser oberndorf on the left wall of the action would be tell tale signs that it is a comm. sporter action or barrelled action many english and german high grade guns were built on military actions ...paul

I have read that many thousand 8X57 rifles were re-chambered for 8X60 during the period that some sort of control was introduced on owning military rifles. Does anyone know more details / facts about this issue?
