Yea the rut has finally started.

The bucks are grunting, and fighting and .... and as dirty buggers as they can get.

Looking for that 200 + point DS fallow buck in "da hills".

Here in South-Africa the impala is also in the rut season but they better finish cause hunting season start in 12 days here(1May).All the rams is tyred in May due to heavy fighting so that makes the hunting succes rate on impala higher during May.I'll see if I can get 1 or 2 during the first 2 weeks of May.

Had a good look around today.

Will have another good look to see if something worth taking is out there on Thursday, which is the ANZAC day holiday here in Australia.

What kind of rifle would you use.Would are say 2506 be enough to do the deed or more for the 3006

Yes Redbeard you are right. These animals are the most popular to hunt in South-Africa.Impala males get up to 60kg and the females get up to45kg.I put them down with my .243 with the greatest of ease.2506 will do fine.Even a 223 is ok but most hunters here use .308 or 3006.They make beautifull trophies. They have a reddish skin and that is were the Afrikaans(my native language) name comes from.
Rooibok = Rooi means red and bok means buck so a direct translation will be redbuck.

Here's a reminder of how good looking they are...

And the impala too.........(1994)

Poor little bugger. Looks good on the wall too. Wouldn't mind a couple more.

Redbeard

You are right. Game such as impala are very good value.

You can hunt a variety of small antelope such as impala, duiker (several species), sprinngbok, warthog, a large number of smaller antelope such as dik dik, grysbok etc where the trophy fees are in the range of US$100 to $US300 each.

I would probably consider taking an impala on each trip as I like them a lot.

These sort of game are usually also available on game ranches where often value for money daily rates are also achieveable.

Ofcourse you still need the airfares. But all in all not a bad introduction to an African safari.

But game such as Kudu and a Zebra rug also are pretty impressive.

Yes redbeard how many of them can I book for you. These are real good value and is wonderfull animals to hunt. They are a quite a challenge because the live in herds of up to 200 animals and you must stay out of sight of 400 eyes and ears.Their meat makes some of the best biltong and stakes and sausage is very nice. There is no other animal with even more or less the same taste. But the best of an impala is the fresh liver over the camp fire with 'pap'.
