Gerard Landlicht scope

Can anyone tell me anything about this claw mount scope? The only thing I can find is in reference to K98 snipers....serial number 51314.

Hopefully someone with real knowledge will step in, as I certainly don't, BUT, those look more like commercial rings than mil. I WANT to say Landlicht made commercial scopes but I can't find anything in Stroebel's book about them (not that there's THAT much info other than copies of old ads and Gun Digest trivia). Wish I could be more helpful.

Gerard was a common maker of commercial hunting scopes in Germany up to the early 30's. This one appears to be a 4X version with claw mounts. The power should be marked on the scope somewhere.

I have a technical question about this type of scope/mount setup.

When were the mounts soldered on the tube on these oldsters?

I would think that solder heat might damage the interior parts/seals or at least cause a shift in tolerances and subsequent moisture ingress, but evidently not?

Anybody know how these were assembled?

Also, what are the seals/gaskets made of in these old scopes?

I'm presently having a scope fitted with traditional German tunnel mounts and the smith is disassembling the scope down to the bare tube in preperation for soldering the mounts. It will then be rust blued, polished and reassembled. Not sure what the seal rings are made of.

Thanks Don for answering not only what it is but how it's done. This particular one is mounted on a 1946 CZ Brno model 22F and it does apperar to be a 4X but I cannot find any markings other than the maker.

That type of work on an already completed, new scope speaks of quite an a amazing amount of effort and technical expertise, particularly if it is done by a gunsmith and not the factory that made it in the first place. Amazing.

Is the scope on which you are having work done a sealed unit? Meaning, does your gunsmith have the ability to purge the scope, nitrogen fill, etc.?

The scope is a vintage 1930's 6X Zeiss Zielsechs. No nitrogen in those days. It is sealed however, but I don't know the details.
