      #8973 - 13/02/04 06:08 PM

OK, my Tropical has the stock quarter-rib, and generally, I like it. however, I should note that I can't freaking figure out who makes mounts for it!!!!

Holmes, the rest of you nuts.... HELP!

The quarter rib cut to accept Ruger Rings. The rings attach directly to the quarter rib. Several manufactures also make rings to fit the rib on Ruger rifles.

Some find this put the scopes a little too far forward. I've never had that problem and I use Leupold scopes almost exclusively. You do need to use a scope that has a lot of eye relief, even if it's not Leupold.

If you find your scope for some reason doesn't work mounted that far forward for you, SK mounts makes a mount that does offset a little farther back. I've used SK's skulputured rings on my No.1 RSI and they seem very well made and easy to install.

hmm, I can't seem to find any listed for the tropical... for the 1-S sure, but not the 1-H.

maybe I'm looking at the wrong stuff, I don't know.

there's a VX-II 1-4x20 just waiting to be installed, and that scope can be mounted quite far back if needed...

It'll take any rings designed for the #1s or the 77/22. Do not pick up a set for the 77! Shouldn't have to worry about mounts if using Ruger-style rings.

I've been working this very issue recently and will post more info tonight.

I have a set of Warne rings for it kicking around somewhere, still in the package. They will QR and work well. I have a set on my RSM Rigby.

Luv2, what do you want for the set... the QR would be nice!

DasMafia, where did you get your No1H? If you bought it new, the rings and a action lock should have come with the rifle from the factory! Any Ruger No1 rings will fit the No1 H. The No1 H usually comes with high rings,so as not to interfere with reloading the rifle, but they come in low, medium, or high! You want as much eye relief in your scope as you can get, if the rifle is a 458 Win Mag, or 458 LOTT.

no, bought it used... apparently should have pressed for the rest of the parts...

its a 375H&H, and it will get low or med. rings. it won't do much hunting, so I'm not too worried about the reload speed... however, I'm starting to have doubts about the eye relief on the VX-II...

I've seen quite a few #1s come out of shops with the rings missing from the box. Hmmm....

Leupold also has Ruger style rings. Additionally, they have a set available with the front ring extended but not in a low height.

The Warne rings are nice units.

I spent quite a bit of time on the phone this morning with the owner of S&K. He's sending me some stuff to look over.

I'll post additional information later from home when I have more time.

You would probably be better off with anybody elses Ruger rings, than factory Rugers. The screws and clamp nuts tend to be soft and I have traced more that one problem of zero shift in Ruger rifles to those screws and clamps.

Several after market brands have been mentioned. One I like is the Millet. All are better than the factory ring set.

dasMafia
I shoot my 1H 375 off the bench a lot. I have had
2 VariXII scopes on it and have never had a problem
with eye relief. They work just fine. About the only
problem with the Ruger rings I have found is that the
factory screws are not very hard and it's easy to bugger
up the slots. I usually replace them with Torx or socket
heads which are much better. The rings do just fine.
Good shooting!

Everyone is to disregard this post...

for trade??? how about a foggy, semi-functional Weaver 3-9x50AO???

other than that, don't have much to trade! unless you were particularly interested in an old, cloudy weaver fixed 4x???

I do, however, have cash! I'll look around and see if I can find anything with any value...

If it were a bright, clear...all metal Weaver 4x I would be interested...The problem with a foggy older Weaver is that they fog between joined lenses...

By the way...some of those old Weavers are very good scopes, no matter what you might think. Weaver, and many other makers, at one time bought Zeiss lenses under contract. There are some damned clear and bright older Weavers still kicking around...and you can always use them as hammers, should the need arise...

I was lucky enough to find one of these in K3 post and cross hair...almost mint. It went on a Sauer cape gun of mine until I find just the right Hensoldt, or Kahles, or Voitlander...It has as good, or even better optics than many of the so called "period" scopes sought out by the purists...and I AM fussy about optics...eyes are getting older.

Some of the newest Weaver line looks OK so far, also. They are not the same scopes as the junk Weaver turned before their demise a while back, and subsequent reincarnation...they were pretty awful IMHO!!

I still prefer Leupolds over all others...sufficiently good optics and long + forgiving eye relief...their 2.5x8 is my alltime favorite, followed by the 1.5x5, 1x4, 2x7, and m8 4x...in that order.

Not knocking other very good scopes...I like the Burris scopes, and see that they are responding to the growing safari rifle market, a good move on their part! Optics in general have never been better!

How MUCH cash...?

the fixed 4x weaver MIGHT be a good piece, but I have no information on it really..

the 2-9 is a pile of hippo dung, on 5x-9x, it only focuses from 15-40 feet. totally useles..

Can you see any problems with the Weaver k4...is it a true older k4, and are the exterior lens retaining rings metal or plastic...? Is it a post & cross hair or just cross hair?

Also, can you see...at all...? Just checking

my eyesight is pretty good, not perfect by any means, but it works (prizm correction, mostly use glasses to read).

the 4x is old, as in my grandfather was using it since before my dad can remember... and my dad is 50.

I would imagine that its at least an early '60s or older piece. its cross-hair only and seems to hold POI quite well, but its not the clearest I've ever seen...
