Hello people, I have dug up a Charles Lancaster Mauser in 7x57, 98 action, three folding rear sight blades, excellent bore...addressed 7 Bury St St James London...

Can anyone tell me about this gunmaker -perhaps a little history - and whether Mauser rifle by this company is of quality or not?

Carlsen,

Welcome to the forum.

Charles Lancaster was a fine maker. I'm sure his work on a Mauser was first class. It would be great if you would post photos of your rifle for all to see.

Congratulations, and welcome to NE.com.

Carlsen,

+1 for pictures. When you;re dating Keira Knightley, you don't want to hide her - do show her off on your arm.

You should have our knowledgeable members helping yu with your gun, but, I do think that posting pictures would be helpful to them in advising you.

Congratulations on a fine rifle and welcome to the Nitroexpress forums.

Good hunting!

Hi guys my original post was worded the wrong way - I havtn acutally bought the rifle yet, I am doing research prior to....anything you guys can tell me about Charles Lancaster built mausers would be appreciated. They are asking 1500 US dollars for it. She looks...well, like a fine british made Mauser rifle, with a mint bore. I wish I had a picture to help the discussion along but I dont.

$1500 and a mint bore sounds like a steal, if everything else is there and it hasn't been drug behind a truck. I like Lancaster doubles but the Lancaster Mausers I've seen were rather dull and unimpressive (I know someone will post their gold-pimped Raj Landcaster, now!). Most I've seen were built on mil actions and not Oberndorf sporters and chambered in .275. All I've seen were open sighted guns unless some jackass drilled and tapped for some cheap American mounts. The workmanship observed seemed fine but nothing exceptional. Should be a great rifle for $1500. If its in great shape, has an Oberndorf action, spectacular wood or anything else neat its all gravy!!

These are pics from Fraserdouble. He says that the rifle was made in Germany but marketed by Lancaster in England. Does anyone know more about the firm & the quality of the rifle?

This looks like a regular Mauser Type B. It was common practice for English firms to order completed rifles from Mauser and put their name on them. It would help to know what markings are on this gun.

definetly agree on the metal work but the stock looks like it hay have been carved up in england although it has some early type B styling, an could have been made from a type M or S stock {grip cap}...also if there are mauser numbers on the stock an action that match then it was most likely all built in germany ...paul
