A lion episode during the 2007 Zim PH proficiency exam
      #89296 - 19/11/07 11:20 PM

Here's a short report I was e-mailed recently from Don Heath in Zimbabwe, regarding some happenings during the 2007 Zimbabwe PH proficiency examination.

It sounds like an interesting time was had by all.

Erik

Quote:

I have just returned from the proficiency exam for prospective Professional Hunters and Guides, held in the Zambezi Valley, and had more than the usual run of excitement. On Wednesday night, an old lioness attacked one candidate, ripped the fly sheet off a tent trying to get one camp hand, and walked into a tent with another candidate sleeping in it.

It all started when I wanted one of my candidates, Dirk Mostert to set up a blind for cats. Traditionally on the exam, we get the candidates to set up a bait for Hyaena and try and shoot one. However, I had heard a lion roaring just behind camp on the three previous nights and seen fresh spoor in the road between two of the camps. I therefore decided that we should set up a “photographic” blind and try and get the lions to come to that. It is also a much better exam test than baiting a hyaena. Many people get decidedly nervous walking along a path to a blind at 4am when you know lion are around – I have often used lion at a blind to separate the men from the boys on the exam.

Anyway, Dirk set up an excellent blind 75m behind the northern most camp, and at 17:10 an old lioness pulled in. The fact that she came from behind us was unsettling. The wind was very strong and she must have smelt us. She was a big animal which is why I had mistaken the spoor in camp for a young male, but she was very thin and had what looked like a bullet wound in her left side. There was also an abscess by her tail. If I had still ben a parks officer, I would have told one of the candidates to shoot her, but as it was I set off to the parks camp just over ½ a km away to get an officer to authorise. Ray Makweh, the parks chief examiner said to wait for the Chief warden and Norman Monks, the ecologist from Mana pools, who both only arrived long after it was dark. I was just relaxing at 19:3 0 when I heard a deep grunt, followed by a scream, and then a panicked shout for a rifle, a roar, and a high pitched wail – “Somebody fetch Don Heath”

- Bugger that, there were 22 wanbe steely-eyed Killers camped around the small dam, why should an old, injured lion in the dark be my problem? Anyway, I walked over to the Rodgers camp which was about 300m from where I was staying. The Apprentice Hunter in that camp had been taking a shower when the old Lioness decided she fancied something softer than the hunk of elephant meat we had used as the bait. Clinton was nice and soft – pink with no fur, claws, horns or even teeth to speak of.

She backed off with all the commotion, and Norman Monks arrived, looked at the Photo’s I had taken of her and told me to shoot her asap.. Around Midnight she arrived at the end camp which was by the spillway- infact they had used the spillway to form a parapet in front of the PH and client tents. She went for one of the camp hands who was sleeping in a little igloo tent some distance back into the Jesse, and ripped the fly sheet off the tent, before a thrown burning brand scared her off. At some point in the night she walked into the candidates tent- Doug Gilbert never woke up and she didn’t attack, and he left at 4am to go on an elephant recovery. At 4:30 I took three candidates and Norman Monks into the Blind. I had two sets of Night Vision goggles, so I left Norman and Dirk with one set inside the blind and kept a rear watch with the other two a little further back. With daylight coming on, I switched to Bino’s, but a careful sweep revealed she had not returned to the bait, nor was she lying up at the spring 50m away. She had to have drunk, and that meant near the spillway or through one of the camps. I dug out my own rifle and organised the three candidates into a sweep line starting at the spillway. One of the camp staff from the end camp showed us the foot prints going into the tend and they said they had seen her half an hour before. I heard a bush buck bark in alarm, and knew she was close. Because I shoot left handed, I took the right of the line and the other three strung out to my left and we moved down the spillway and across the dam wall. After about 50m I has the distinct “watched” feeling – and stopped the sweep whilst we double checked behind- Norman then took two candidates towards a tangle of attaxacantha, whilst I took Doug Campbell to investigate a very thick Shepard’s bush. When we were about 20 paces out I saw a tail flick and Doug said he could see a “blazing yellow furnace” watching him. The bush was too thick and too shaded to see more. I steped up onto a small ridge and shouted at the lioness and she swung to face me. Doug shot her neatly with a “walterhog” bullet from his .416. Done deal! Allover bar the dissection that revealed she had feline Aids (FIV) a broken toe, broken teeth, an abscess at the base of her tail, and an abscess where a buffalo horn had punctured her side.

Never say that our exams are substandard

Fascinating story!!

Great read!!

Shot with a 416 with muzzlebrake and looks like a scout type red dot mounted scope!!

?Cutting edge shooting technology--

Dunno if I would trust a red dot scope on a lion rifle.Your in deep sh*t if it craters. As for the muzzlebreak---

Erik, great story and thanks for posting.

And they weren't even "hunting"!

IS there a brake on that thing?

And hey, Hoppdoc, what's wrong with a muzzle brake!!

I've studied the picture pretty closely, and would say that there isn't a muzzle brake.

Erik--
I think your right!!

I was wrong, there doesn't appear to be a muzzlebarke present.

As to muzzlebrakes I love them but don't need to be shooting them--I have hearing loss and you can sustain *additional*
hearing loss even shooting with plugs as they only lower the noise 30 DB. A short barreled rifle with brake can STILL cause additional hearing loss even with plugs!!

I shoot without brakes with plugs to protect what hearing I've got left!!

And rightly so. That isn't a DGR you're looking at there anyway, it's bolt cranker trash.

Shooting hyenas for target practice??? There is a funny new-fangled notion going around called "conservation"; maybe Zim oughta look into it. Or are they still eradicating wildlife to control tsetse?

More than enough! I meant to say that would be good to see some "conservation" in Kenya (as opposed to preservation)...

My post was actually directed at LGF, if that wasn't clear. And I think JabaliHunters comment regarding the lack of "conservation" in Kenya, in contrast to "preservation", is spot on.

We've all seen how Kenyas attempt at "preservation" has basically be a huge failure.

My objection was to people who shoot animals for target practice. Especially hyenas, one of the most extraordinarily interesting and intelligent animals in the world.

Yeah, conservation in Kenya is a catastrophe. As it is, policy could not be better designed to make rural people hate wildlife and eradicate it as quickly as they can. All due to the utter corruption of the bunny huggers, who would rather see everything go extinct by strangling in snares rather than to see anything shot.

I am quite involved in the attempt to bring back hunting as a conservation tool. However, the American and British animal rights groups have very deep pockets, and bribe heavily to maintain the disastrous status quo.

All fair and good points. However, in order to have a rigorous testing system such as that for Zim PHs, many would argue that it is a small sacrifice. In the grand scheme of things, I am sure that more hyena's are indirectly preserved through the efforts of the Zim PH fraternity than are destroyed during the exams.

And how does using a random hyena as a target preserve anything? Shooting over a bait is as challenging as shooting from a bench rest. How many PH's know that when they shoot a big trophy 'dog' hyena, that it is almost always a female with nursing babies down a burrow? As to the conservation-consciousness of its hunters, Zim provides the only documented example of a lion population being absolutely hammmered by overhunting for trophies. Females, juvenile males, everything vaguely resembling a lion was nailed. Helluva way to conserve anything. I am afraid that the majority of hunters, pro's and clients, think that pulling a trigger makes them conservationists. It ain't that easy.

I wouldn't call someones firearm "trash" just because you don't seem to like bolt guns. I found the story quite interesting, and the rifle looks very nice. Thank you Eric for posting this information.

I personally don't approve of shooting over baits either, and to be honest I'm not big on hunting predators full stop. But it is a big part of the safari industry and the majority of people that want to shoot lions or leopards will do their time bored out of their minds in the blind. Given that fact, it is good that the PH should be properly trained. As I see it, the purpose of this exercise is not to assess the candidates shooting ability, but to recreate and test the candidate's whole approach to setting up a lion bait and blind, and then re-create the after shot approach with the client through to the trophy preparation, etc, etc, without actually having to bring in a lion and shoot it. I didn't say that I agree with it and maybe it could be done without actually firing a shot - thats it something that the ZPHA will have to decide.

anyone who's been to zimbabwe in the last couple years knows there is'nt much 'conservation' being practiced there these days.
and the comment "bolt cranker trash" is about the most ignorant thing i've heard in quite some time!

Thanks for that! First of all, any PH who is currently still operating and providing some kind of disincentive to poachers is actually aiding conservation. Secondly, the bolt-cranker trash comment was not mine. It is also not ignorant, it is a subjective opinion and was also said as a joke - hence the after the post

Zimbabwe's Zambezi valley national park and Safari areas are a great example of African conservation at its best, unlike Kenya's small "island" Nat parks.

Sorry for reviving this old thread. I watched the youtube video on this very topic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jakKUkKTM6c&feature=relmfu

In that video Don Heath speaks of bullet failure from the .416 and the larger exit wound created by the 9.3X62.The same can be seen in the last photo. The report posted here does not mention it.Not criticising, but pointing out what was missing.
