Cogswell Harrison Mauser?

I have run across a Cogswell Harrison (hope its spelled right) Mauser 98 in 30.06, no engraving, "looks" original, in good working order with about 75% original finish, with a blondish walnut stock. Any info. as to value (ball park) / desirability would be appreciated. I know the info. is sparse but all I have at the moment. --- John303

Since my last post disappeared, I'll try again,

I picked one up in .375 a couple of years ago in Edmonton for about $750 with a Leupold. It had been drilled and tapped, seen some obvious use. They aeren't an H&H, but 2nd tier, good quality. The price will vary with your location in Canada.

You got a good one !!!

Quality can vary a bit between guns, some are very good,
some are shit. As soon as you take a close look and work
the action you'll know which it is !!!

When I worked in a sporting good store back in the 70's we considered them about equal to Parker Hale Mausers - no better, no worse.

Thank you all for your responses. I contacted the shop, the rifle was still available so I decided to purchase on memory alone, the price is right and sounds like bargain, you get what you pay for. I will post the result of the autopsy at a later time. --- John303.

The rifle arrived to-day and I'm pleased with it (for a tad under $300.00 Cdn) I didn't expect much. All the #s match-action, barrel, stock etc. Stock has been refinished but not screwed up, I will refinish and clean up the checkering as time permits - it is walnut, golden honey in colour. Reblue? later perhaps but not right away. Barrel is 21 inches in lenght with 2 grooves-it cleaned up mirror bright. Nice 3 blade rear sight, action not drilled & tapped for scope mounting but rear bridge has been altered (ground) down like on the commercial Mausers. Hope to take some before and after pics. but it will be awhile. --- John303

2-groove barrel on a Mauser action? Interesting.

Remachined Springfield or WW2 1917 rebarrel spare perhaps?

We'll probably never know the source of the 2 groove barrel unless records exist somewhere, it's very possible that as a cost saving measure C&H aquired surplus military barrels. Perhaps other C&H owners might chime in about their barrels re; the # of grooves, I would suspect that the 2 groovers were only used on the lesser grades. -- John303

You may contact Cogswell and Harrison and they will give you the completion date on your rifle. For a fee, they will send you a letter with all the details.
