LYMAN MOULD MODIFICATION (PICS UPDATED)
      #88916 - 13/11/07 11:45 PM

I experimented with my Lyman mould by cutting a new circlip groove 4 mm closer to the nose of the hollow base plug.
The result is a 600gn projectile instead of a 475gn projectile .
Accuracy tests are acceptable at 1.5 inches at 50 yards.
Still hasnt been tested on big boned game yet but am sure it will perform up to my expectations.

Al: That looks like the perfect solution:

Alan, if the skirt collapses due to breech pressure rise, you can easily turn the plug down a bit to increase the skirt thickness. Of course doing this will increase the weight again. Your idea of decreasing the depth of the skirt is a good one. Foster slugs have too-thin noses and usually flatten out into disks or break up when hitting something hard. Good idea. (I still prefer round balls - easier and faster to cast and the right size for any bore - just order the correct RB size from Jeff Tanner)

Alan - what gun did you use for testing? - rifled, I presume - what twist, please?

By moving the plug out to increase the weight of the projectile,it also increases the skirt thickness as the plug has a taper on it.

I used my Greener GP,24 inch barrel with a screw on paradox choke .
Also tried them in my Suhl & sohn SxS with smooth bores,24 inch barrels.
Hard to tell the accuracy in the double as no sights have been fitted as yet, however a 6-8 inch group at about 50 yards was achieved using both barrels.

You are right about the thicker skirts with retracting the plug. I didn't think about that.
: That's good accuracy! I take it the Greener is smooth, with the addition of the rifled choke? If so, where'd you get the choke? I think I need one. I know I need one!
: 6" to 8" with non-dedicated ammo for the double is quite good too. 6" to 8" was about norm for 3 lefts and rights from Greener's 8 bore double smooth 'jungle-gun'.

The choke is a FRANCHI VARIOMIX RIFLED.
A local gunsmith shortened the barrel and cut the thread for the choke to screw on.

I've sent the Washington Franchi dealer an e-mail about the choke. I didn't see it listed anywhere on the Franchi USA site, however.
: Alan - where did you buy your's from. I-too am very interested in picking one up.

Daryl,I got mine from the local gunsmith, unfortunately he has no more left.
I also tried another gunsmith but he has none either.

Franchi and Benelli merged and are now owned by Beretta so try them.

Thanks for the suggestion Ian - has anyone tried the Hastings or Remington rifled chokes?
