Oooops! Did it again. . . .
      #88601 - 10/11/07 01:41 AM

Made a deal yesterday on my newest headache/pride and joy:

CASED ALEXANDER HENRY .577 DOUBLE HAMMER RIFLE.

.577- 2 3/4" caliber, 28" damascus steel barrels with folding express sight. Rebounding hammers with bolted safeties and under lever opening. Checkered forend and pistol grip buttstock with engraved and casehardened grip cap, heel and toe plates. The barrel retaining all of the original damascus pattern and brown, softening slightly. The locks and action showing much original casehardened finish. Beautiful wood and crisp checkering. Excellent bores. In it's original case with maker's label. All of the accessories are original and NUMBERED to the gun. Exceptional. Weight 10lbs 3 oz.

I should have it in hand next week. Can't wait to hold it!!!!

Will report further.

A beautiful rifle! It's interesting to see the different style of stalking safety yours has. Never seen that style before. Thanks.

I doubt that rifle will give you any headache at all!
What a fine example! Full accessories numbered to the gun, wow!

Did it come with any info from the maker's register? Loading it should be a snap.

AKMike: safeties in that position are not uncommon on best-grade hammer-guns of the period, particularly those by AH. The 20/.577 I shoot occasionally has identical locks in every respect.

One wonders why Alex Henry fitted safety-bolts to rebounding locks in the first place.

...because he can!

Thanks Marrikai,
I have never seen it done that way. My saftey slides in from the rear as does all the rest I've seen.
But I haven't seen that many up here.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

The rifle will be in hand in a few days, and I am anxious to handle it. I am almost certain I first saw this rifle in Las Vegas 5 to 6 years ago and fell for it then. At that time I was unable to make a deal on it and sorely regretted that. I kept the owner's name and address for a number of years after that and called him several times. Then I lost his contact information and assumed the rifle was finally lost also.

Out of the blue it appears on Monty Whitley's website! Monty bought it at the Tulsa, Oklahoma show just recently. Well, opportunities like this don't show themselves very often. I closed my eyes and took the plunge.

Now I will be looking for reloading components and equipment. Does anybody have any brass they want to sell? I'm finding that .577 brass is a bit hard to come by at the moment. I guess I'll order a set of .577 2 3/4" dies from Huntington along with a shellholder and a trim die. If anybody has such a setup lying around unused and would like to part with it, let me know.

More will be said as this new adventure unfolds. I can't wait to shoot this rifle.

Sorry, Curl. No dice. All my .577 reloading gear is pressed into service on a fairly regular basis around here!

Hope you get what you need, but isn't everything you could ever want right there in the case?

Marrakai,

Let's hope it has everything right there in the case. Yet I imagine loading will be a bit faster and easier on the RCBS.

I'm sure we will have some discussion as I develop loads for this beauty. The .577 is new to me. It's old hat to you.

Whose brass are you using? Bertram? Jamison came out great guns to produce brass and then got snagged into a government contract making ammo for the shitass war. Huntington is expecting delivery from Horneber . . . sometime. I have feelers out to others for some Bertram brass. What is your take on the quality of Bertram brass in this caliber?

There you go, my first of many questions.

Curl:
I shoot fifty-fifty BELL and Bertram, about 30 pieces of each. The Bell stuff dates from a few years back obviously, and a couple of cases didn't make the cut due to imperfections or folds in the brass. The Bertram is newer, and certainly needs a tidy-up before first loading, particularly deburring flash-holes.

There doesn't seem to be any difference between the two at the pressures we're talking about. I neck-size only in 'custom' dies, with no neck-expander, but I do crimp this cartridge (with a home-made crimp die).

Marrakai,

In your experience, can the Bertram .577 3 1/4" brass be cut back to 2 3/4" without reaming the necks? Obviously chambers vary, and what holds true for one might not hold true for another. But that aside, if the brass thickens noticeably in that distance you might have seen it. I ask because Huntington's has the 3 1/4" brass in stock now.

Matt,

The Shot Show and the Antique Arms Show are scheduled on different dates this year. The Antique Arms Show is Jan 17-20. If I go, it will be to that show, so I'll miss you, unfortunately.

Thanks for the thought.

Curl:
Sorry, dunno. I have no experience with the 3 1/4 length brass. All my BELL brass was shortened from 3 inches, but my Bertram cases were ordered at 2 3/4 from memory. If not, they were shortened from 3 inches like the BELL. I certainly never gave neck thickness a single thought.

In a golden oldie like that AH, I doubt the neck area of the chamber will be at minimum dimensions. I don't think you'll have trouble. The only issue might be neck-cracks eventually in the thicker brass, but a neck-anneal every 4 or 5 reloads should take care of that. In fact, it probably wouldn't hurt to give the Bertram cases a mild neck-anneal after first firing, as they come necked-down slightly and tend to be expanded some by the initial seating.

The A. Henry arrived Monday. I have had a couple days to very briefly go over it. Time demands have stood in the way of more fondling.

It's absolutely magnificant. Aside from a couple of screws that had backed out a bit loose and out of place (as seen in the photos), it's in marvelous shape. I timed the screws right off.

Last night I did a chamber cast, including about 2" of barrel. The chambers are indeed 2 3/4".

Get this! The barrels are of course Henry rifled, but they have 10 lands and grooves, not the usual odd number. The first I've noticed with an even number. Ahead of the chamber my largest measurement across what could be classified "grooves" is .5875" - quite proper. Bores are nearly perfect with only the slightest evidence of use. It looks to make about 1/2 twist in the 28" of barrels.

The breech face shows almost no marks at all and certainly no flash-back pitting, corrosion pitting, or other malady.

The action is absolutely tight and on the face. Don't think any idiot fired NE rounds in it (unlike the last .577 BPE I considered buying).

The noses of the hammers have only the slightest marks, indicating very little firing over the many years.

The stock is in marvelous condition. No cracks, checks, or gross blemishes. Only slight handling marks. Beautiful English walnut and highly figured.

The brown finish on the damascus barrels shows only slight wear from handling, that being around the forend and just ahead of the forend where the barrels are grasped when firing.

The engraving is lovely, as it should be.

All finishes, both metal and wood, appear to be absolutely original and never "improved" or "restored".

I haven't cataloged the accessories yet, but will do so. I probably could use a bit of reference help with what should be there so I can identify anything missing. Aside from loading and cleaning tools I did notice a traditional bone or ivory screw-top container with spare firing pins, firing pin escutchions, and two other pins I cannot identify right off.

On my digital scales the rifle weighs 10.19 lbs., which converts to 10 lbs., 3 oz. precisely. The barrels weigh 5.81 lbs. or 5 lbs., 13 oz.

Now to gather up brass, modern loading dies, and cast some bullets! Interesting work ahead.

What a nice "big brother" to my Purdey .500 BPE.

More later,
Curl
