Removing the Rifle stock?
      #88410 - 07/11/07 01:37 PM

I have read some where that removing the stock from the action changes your zero. Is this fact or a myth.

Cheers Will

I think it depends on whether you reinstall the same stock and how precise of a zero you want. You'd probably still be on the paper, but I doubt the shots would be where they were before removal-too many variables, and screw tightness holding the stock on would make a difference(unless maybe with a glass bedded action and torqued screws turned back to exactly the same setting).
Any experts out there, if I'm wrong just let me(us) know.

Hi Will,

Yes, removing and replacing a rifle stock can change the zero. Usually the rifle will "settle" into the bedding after a few shots and return to the original zero, if the bedding is good to begin with. Pay careful attention to the torque applied, and to the order in which the screws are tightened. An inch-pounds torque wrench is invaluable.

Take care, Tom

Bill2584,
I did some work on my sons Remington 700 BDL. Remington says the stock bolts should be tightened to 45 ft/in/lbs.
I bought a torgue wrench that does the required
45 ft/in/lbs. When I was done I put it back togother the exact way Remington said to. Voila perfect back to the exact zero.

I have a rifle that to clean I have to disassemble every time I clean it. Yes when put back together
the scope is off zero.
