Unless the gun is buggered in some way, it seems they are about 10K under market price. ??

But do the 1950's guns really have the nostalgia and mystic of those pre war guns? Who were the artisans employed during the post war period? Ben, I would take a good solid turn of the century bpe over this gun any day.

Everything I have checked into --that should be in the 15 to 20,000 range--if it was at Westley Richards in Montana--it would be 30,000 plus..

They aren't that bad, I have 2 of them, a White Hunter in 500
and a 465 Boxlock.

Yes, they are sometimes valued under pre war guns but it all comes down to the particular gun.

People seem to pass them up based on rumour and other peoples say so without actually looking themselves

500,
You may be right,I would not buy a Chapuis or Heym either. The auction is not aimed at me as a buyer.

Gatsby,
You are quite right. My pre war 500 is a plain "Gold name" grade, but much more nicely finished. Note the bottom strap stopping short of very plain grip cap, with no trap. Rib has no engraving and only a single rear sight. Not withstanding this a great hunting double in a good stopping catridge. Bargin at 15k, 25k not too much to pay, assumming its in good shape, then its a matter of how much you want it !!!!.

Definately a bargain at $15k, I'd buy it for that if it
was here - subject to a bore check.

I think $20k, maybe at the absolute tops $22k
at the retail end.

They are damn good hunting rifles.

Na....not really!!.

George Caswell had one(maybe thats the one) for only 16k for sale for a long time. Had the gun been made in 1935 or 1921 it would have been much more attractive.

True. The post war guns have to be judged very carefully. One may be fine, and the next from the same maker terrible. Quality of the pre war guns was much more reliable.

You may find the following web site of interest. There is mention of the White Hunter Rigby model.

The Wite Hunter was a WR Model designation from the 50's. ?

Yes, it was a Westley Richards model. Don't think Rigby ever had a model called that.

I have that W.R.'s twin brother, also from '54, but in 470.
I consider it a super hunting rifle that I'm not afraid to take into the bush, which I did quite often in pursuit of the Chewore jumbo it eventually hammered.

It is mine. I got it from Champlin. It shoots great. I bought it as a keeper but it is for sale at the right price.

500NITRO, I like those rumours, and mistaken word-of-mouth downgrades! I've bought some real nice doubles for good low prices because of them!

Come on guys, bad mouth some more of them! See if you can roll this one back to about 10K USD

Dugaboy

Yep, I agree - but I love my 2 and they are the
ones I am least likely to get rid off.

A bit like the 450/400's that no one
wanted as they all thought it was a crap calibre.

Then everyone realised what a mistake had been made
and the price skyrocketed, and now other manufacturers
are making the guns in one of the calibres, everyone wants one.
