Anyone ever built a .22LR double?
      #88128 - 01/11/07 12:30 PM

It's an idea I've had for years that won't go away-wondering how feasible it would be to start with a .410 double receiver-likely a new Stoeger or one of the EAA imports to keep costs down a bit. After that I'd like to get rimfire barrels of the same contour as the .410 barrels. IF legal it would be 16" barrels instead of 18"-but not sure on legality since it would be originally a shotgun receiver. I know, it would be a long project, but if I could get it off the ground and it shot well, imagine rabbit hunting with a miniature "elephant gun".
Would the idea be workable, and has anyone tried it? If so, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendation-now I know it would be possible-a lot of work but I knew that. Likely a couple years yet before I actually complete it if I do start, but at least I know it would be possible.

There was a good article with photos etc in the "Double Gun Journal" a few years ago on just such a project. The author built a 22RF double rifle on a boxlock 410 side-by-side. He had barrel sleeves made up with the 22 chambers excentric(sp?) to the 410 originals so the centrefire pins would hit the rim of the rimfire chamber. He had some interesting hurdles throughout the project (particlarly in regulating the barrels), but was happy with the result. I no longer subscribe to that rag, but will try & find which edition the article was in.

I would suspect that to have barrels specifically made up would be extremely expensive. I'm no gunsmith, but I imagine it would also be prohibitively expensive to have have chambers concentric to the outside barrel profiles, as the firing pin geometry would have to be dramatically modified.

So yes, it can & has been done. Think of the possibilities with 4 rimfire cartridges now available?!

It's not quite .22 LR - but how about .22 Hornet or .218 Bee? I don't have my copy of Cartridges of the world but I'd think it should fit the frame - think like a miniature .450/400. It would be easier as it doesn't require the offset firing pins, and you can reload to get the shots to regulate.

Tony Galazan had some Fox 22's years back. They were cute but totally useless for the money.

It would be a hell of a lot cheeper to fit excentric bushed firing pins than to machine excentric barrels.

PS you cannot "reload to regulate" unless the barrels have been regulated to shoot together with some specific but unknown load in the past. Once it has been done you can reload to find this for want of a better word "sweet spot" or regulation load. You cannot get two barrels that bear no common POI to shoot together by loading alone.

sure did. I disagree about eccentric barrels. I think they are easier than trying to do ecentric bushings and firing pin set ups. I used 22 liners and mad eccentric bushings for the chamber are. Then to regulate I made eccentric muzzle bushings and dialed it in. Al learning process to say the least. I used a Spanish 410 double as the basis

here are a few pics

Brian.
I quite agree, liners and excentric bushes are a good way to do it.
I was refering in my post to the notion of excentric one piece barrels, which on a lathe involve making a false centre for machineing. Not beyond the wit of man but a pain to do. And chambering is a problem unless it is done first as you have no true concentric surface left to revolve the barrel off of.

"Anyone ever..." Yes. At least I started it. The wood-less and un-blued "project" is still laying up on a shelf in my shop, in fact I just got it down when my son visited yesterday. I to used the off-center liner method although for some reason I didn't think far enough ahead to do the same at the muzzle. Used a pair of 8mm Mauser take-off barrels to sleeve the mono-block. The .323 bores were close enough to the liner O.D. to make the idea inviting and most of the contouring work was already done. With temp. sights I got it shooting to minute of softball at 30yds. using the usual regulation method. Don't ask why I chose 30yds., I don't know!

I used an old Stevens action that was literally a (box) basket case. Approached it simply as a learning process and boy did I do a lot of "learning!" While the relatively weak Stevens/Savage design is not reccomended for anything not originally intended (and then only in good condition), I figured the .22LR would be safe enough. If you have LOTS of time on your hands, not terribly high expectations and a desire to have some fun with something unique, have at it!
