MOST EXCITING NA ANIMAL TO HUNT???
      #74427 - 23/03/07 10:31 PM

What's youre favorite animal to hunt in the states?

In what order? For excitement? For fun??

Pure Adrenaline for me-

Brown Bear-big bore excitement( I would luv to get a polar bear someday!)
Big Boar Pigs-they sometimes charge at close range!
?? Black Bear-(knew one fellow charged by one)

For fun??

Elk/Moose is great!!
A mature Whitetail Buck is challenging-
Turkey hunting/calling is pure entertainment--

For high volume fun just walking around with buddies without a dog and kicking up Pheasant or quail is really relaxing/entertaining.

What are YOUR favorite stateside animals to hunt??

Doc -- I really like Fall spot-n-stalk black bear on the Kenai Peninsula. You'll see bears almost every day and there's always the odd brow bear sighting, goats, sheep, moose, etc... Plus, as a reward, for the climb above treeline...there are gobs of bluberries.

White Tail Deer hunting in the Lauel thickets of the North East. It can be fustrating, but you end up getting shots at bucks that you would not normally get. My rifle of choice for this kind of hunting a Marlin 336 30/30 and any 170 gr Bullet. A long shot is 30 yards. I do this type of hunting only in wet mist conditions. My last such buck when 8 points and well over 180 lbs dressed. I also found late season Bull Elk to get my blood flowing.

bear was TOO CLOSE!! Sounds like a head shot situation to me but what do I know??

I think there is a difference between most exciting and most enjoyable.

For exciting, adrenalin, I would choose Brown Bear although I would like to try Polar Bear sometime.

For enjoyable, anything that involves a pack trip and some good companions.

I'll post only from personal experience, as I haven't hunted any of the big bears. My top three favorites, not necessarily in order, are ducks in the Eastern Lake Ontario region, Pronghorn in Central Wyoming, and Whitetail in the Black Hills of Wyoming and South Dakota. Hunting Quebec-Labrador Caribou can be a lot of fun as well, especially on an unguided hunt.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt it would be elk. I love to hunt deer and antelope. Prairie dogs are a gas but for me nothing can beat elk.

Grizzly in the Brook's Range would be my favorite, but all mountain game is exciting........big Canadian whitetail and black bears next......

For a pure heart pumping, adrenaline rush, a big coastal brown bear in the thick stuff is hard to beat.......

I have only hunted for black bear not the big browns so I can't comment from experience on the subject but I suspect that the two are worlds apart in the thrill department.

By FAR the most fun I have had hunting is taking a 3 or 4 cool bevarges, a well scoped single shot rifle, a couple of hundred rounds of 22-250, and sandbag into a good Nebraska pasture and just drilling into a prarie dog town with a few pals.... laughing like hell whilst lying in dry cow pies and laying bets on anything from furthest shot, biggest varmit, best back flip out of the hole,

And to think that all this fun can be had while making a cattle owner happy for cleaning up the pasture and lessening the number of holes his cows could break their legs in.... Oh and its great fun when a badger comes strutting across your line of sight.... its like hitting a beach ball after just looking for heads popping up at a few hundred yards for a couple of hours.

I know this isnt even remotley close to being dangerous hunting (unless you happen to forget about the electric fence you hopped when entering the pasture lol) but it has to have the highest giggle factor!

I shot a brownie in an area where they were so thick we had to run off 6 more while we were skinning out the first one, then packed it a mile in the dark up a river with salmon spawning...........we were at defcon 5 the whole time.
For fun I'll take hunting ditch parrots over a good dog and with good friends.

In my personal experience, the only time I can remember hearing my heart beating in my ears was following up a wounded 9 foot plus brownie in the alders in Alaska... we eventually went back out and come in several hours later--we discovered that had we continued on our first attempt that the brownie had actually been lying in wait and had we gone about another 25 yards there would have been some serious action-- as it was, we found him dead up the trail about 100 yards further..

As to fun, bow hunting elk in the fall is pretty hard to beat..however bowhunting whitetail, antelope or muleys is a blast as well...

Being alone on the tundra hunting caribou is awesome as well..

All in all, anytime one can get out and enjoy what God has given us is a GREAT Day.

Mine was desert bighorn. I've never hunted anything else that wary, and on terrain with little or no cover where they can move with ease, while I hold on for dear life.

Because I enjoy eating what I kill, I have to place elk at the top of any list, followed by black bear. I've killed just about everything that walks, swims or crawls and flies too. It's all good!

As much as I dream of a good, fair chase hunt for elk(cow or bull, I'm more concerned with meat than trophies) my favorite hunt has to be early season ducks-sure, mostly teal and woodies, but they're not much bigger than a fist and moving at a high rate of speed-fun targets and lots of activity. Hopefully next month when season opens we'll be able to get my young nephew his first duck. He's been going along with us for 3 years, got his first gun last year(did great on rabbits) so hopefully he'll get up early enough to come with us for ducks this year-or maybe a goose later on-can't wait to see the look on the kid's face when he gets a bird that big.

update on nephew's duck hunting-he didn't go early season, but we've taken him out a few times now that late season's on, he's gotten several-happy kid, I did have to pass up ducks so he can shoot some, but it's worth it to see him get those first ducks.
