Peter,

Tropical tins are a blast from the past. You never know what you will get when a tin is opened. Sometimes its cartridge dust or pristine ammo. If there is a small pin hole and the ammo was stored in a humid climate more often than not the ammo will be totally worthless or often powder. Ammo will most likely never be packaged this way ever again due to cost. Its a great idea that died many years ago when Kynoch stopped production.

Peter,

Yea that would be cool if some ammo company would package ammo in tins or some sort of quick to open can with a pull top. Can technology has come a long way sense the days of tropical tins. Wonder if Kynoch sent the ammo out to be repackaged or if it was done in house? That might make an interesting story.

If you are the curious type, then go ahead and open it. If you are interested in the cash value, then I think those that deal in collectable cartridges would say no.

OPEN OPEN OPEN!!!!! Lets see the lost treasure, if any.

Most that collect tins and bricks would rather not open a sealed tin/brick. For all we know this one might already be opened?

Loose .600NE cartridges are common enough, but an unopened tropical tin is GOLD!

Opening that can would be the most extreme form of VANDALISM!

Anyway.... I'm sure the owner already knows that.

I believe the container is actually ZINC. Tin does not oxidize. I also know where there are some for sale.

Farhan

I don't think that 470 is particularly rare. What makes the 600 nice is the rarity of the 600 cartridges themselves, added to the tin.

The tinned ones are worth more than the cardboard boxes because they are rarer but not substantially more.

The 600 tropical tin in the photos is the holy grail of tropical tins. Have you ever seen another one or know of any others out there? If so please pass put me in contact with the owner as I would like to acquire such a rare bird. The 600 Jeffery box is beyond being super rare. If you follow cartridge auctions you will see just how much more tins bring than the same number of rounds in boxes.

I would think the Axite loading would be even more scarce.

You missed my point, which was not about the 600 but about 470 in a tin.

No I have never seen 600 in a tin but I do have a couple of tins of 416, one of 476 WR, a couple of 455 Webley and another that I can't remember.

Is there a site you know that would list prices for full boxe3s of Kynoch?

600 ammo of original Kynoch (Witton) vintage and older are quite rare nowadays, certainly here in the U.K, much of it was shipped to the US to collectors over the last 15 years or so. As a rough price guide, here in the U.K a solid with the Kynoch headstamp of late manufacture (the official line is that the last Witton loaded batch of ammo was run off in 1956, although there is evidecne that a later run specifically for Hollands was done in the late 1960's or even very early 1970's- these had white 5 round card packets rather than the usual red/yellow) these will sell for around £35 GBP per round.

Older headstamped ammo such as Eley will sell for significantly more, upto £70 per round and various bullet patterns will account for price variations also, again officially Kynoch never formally offered the round as a split nosed, but I have a packet of 5 rounds factory split rounds based on the ordinary nickel soft nosed bullet, the packet being marked for solids but with split nosed being manuscripted over the top, so although not advertised they did exist.

As for a sealed tropical tin with Axite loading, these must be exceptionally rare today, I have never seen one other than in a picture and certainly not for sale, if one did come for sale the price to a serious collector could be immense. I did buy a 10 round oringinal Kynoch box with yellow label of soft nosed .600's and given the box was in excellent condition that box cost me £350 five years ago, so as for the tin, it is anyones guess at the true value. There are plenty of tins of lesser calibres around still as these were always more common than the .600 bore.

If the tin were mine it would remain soldered shut as that is where the value lies, its original state.

WOW!!

A really neat find!

As for "tropical packaging", not exactly .600 Nitro, but billions of rounds of 7.62x54R and 7.62x39 were, are and will be packaged in precisely the same way and lots has been sold here in the USA. In fact, the tin pictured would be difficult to distinguish from lots of Chinese ammo sold here in years past, and a devious fellow could indeed have a "Kynoch" sticker made up, weathered and plastered on a can of such ammo.

The weight of the package would be a dead giveaway to the savvy prospective buyer, but there might be a sucker or two that might take it hook, line and sinker.

Maybe a better scam would be to put a sticker on that says "240 Belted Rimless Nitro Express" or some such that might weigh more closely to the 7.62x54R ammo enclosed.

All that to tempt the owner of this treasure to get out his can opener and do a little investigating into the contents of that package...!!

Ain't I a stinker...

Yep you are correct about the 470.

Tins are really neat and will most likely never be duplicated to package sporting ammuntion.

Hello Jonathan,

Good to see you post here after a long time. The gentleman who owns this tin has some more which I have posted pictures of elsewhere on this forum.

Whenever you find time, please do send some pictures of the cartridges in your collection to the forums. I know that you have some rare treasures too.

Best wishes and hope to see you often,

Good hunting!
