Holland & Holland Mauser Restoration - 240 Apex

I've acquired a 98 Commerical Mauser that was built by Holland & Holland in 240 Apex. The metal is correct and excellent however the stock has been changed to a German sporter style. I would like to restock the rifle and am looking for advise. What wood should I use?....English Walnut? Pattern?.....got a couple of H&H catalogs however they don't show the butt details very well. Anyone got a picture or two of one? Where these checkering in an English style flat diamonds? How many lines per inch? Also, any organization able to trace the origin of this rifle? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Holland would be able to give you
details of the rifle.

If you post the serial number, one of us
on here would be able to give an approximate
date.

Barrel is engraved "Holland & Holland, 98, New Bond Street, London". On the barrel knox also engraved " Holland's 240 "APEX" Rimmless Cartridge " plus proof marks and "240 2.50 COR.MKI34-100Max".

Underside of Barrel is stamped "SH" with "829" underneath and then "13974".

The receiver on the underside is marked "829". Just behind the recoil are a number of symbols and "28". Receiver is also stamped "829" just behind the front scope base.....there may be more stamped beneath the scope base however I don't want to remove it for fear of damage.

Bolt is marked "829" as is the extractor collar.

Triggerguard is also engraved "829" on the bow.

Flag safety on bolt cocking piece is marked "SAFE" in gold.

Action, trigger.....all very smooth. Trigger looks factory modified to single stage.....sear highly polished and trigger reprofiled to nest in bow of guard. Parts marked "89".

Dark rust blue finish on all components except sear. Inside rails have been polished bright.

Any comment greatly appreciated!

Will have a look for teh serial number.


Re the gunstock, any good stocker that has worked on
English guns should know what is what when it comes
to Stocking English bolt guns.

You may need to ask around the US / US Forums
to find a stocker.


Also, have a look at the various gun web sites
in the US as they often have English / Holland
Bolt guns for sale and therefore pictures
- Westley Ricgards is one / Champlin Arms is the other,
the Big, Long time US Retailer on the East Coat
- can't think of the name.

The rifle is listed on p.18 of my 1928 Holland & Holland catalog (copy) and on p.22 of my 1934 catalog (also a copy). Only reference material I have. Does any body know when production was introduced and when it ceased?

Have a look in Cartridges of the World.

That should tell you when it started.

It never really ceased - after all, they are
there to make guns so if someone really wants
one, they'd make it, however I think other
options have come to the fore - 243 being one.

The 240 Apex was introducted in 1920 (reference C. Hawks; Holland& Holland). It's a flat trajector cartridge and Holland & Holland's catalog claims " Very Flat Trajectory.....Only one sight requirement up to 250 yards.....No recoil.....Extremely acurate.....Muzzle velocity 3000 fps....Striking energy, 2000 ft. lbs." By Chuck Hawks statements...a very impressive cartridge for 1920's especially with powders available. Loaded with modern powders it should exceed the ballistics of the 243 WSM.

My intention is not to start a discussion on the 240 Apex. I would like to know a lot more detail on the rifle. I will contact Holland & Holland however I understand his takes months to get a response. If anybody has one of these and wants to chat offline they can contact me via an email.

I'm curious about build details and potential gun value as well.

H&H started with #1 in 1920, finished with #4330 in 1992. I have one built in 1950, #211X. So, 1930-32 for #829 would fit in just about right.

I contacted Holland & Holland today.......they confirmed that they have the rifle's history hence I've authorized them to proceed with a documented search. Once I receive the info I'll post it on the Form.

Do any of the recent Holland & Holland books show any details of this rifle and its accessories?

Artic....any chance of getting a description of your rifle, it's originality and perhaps a picture or two? You can email me off line if you like.
